What's out there that'll work well off a standard audio output jack?

i must note that they need to have good soundstage, as i'll be listening to jazz, bebop, and acid jazz (maybe some electronica, maybe some rock).

currently, i'm using absolutely nothing special: px100s. i like them, but they definately arent stunning. plus the total lack of isolation is not helpful unless you're in a dark room or something!

i hear ms1's are awesome, but how are they for jazz?

I think you will find that the K81DJ is a far superior can to the PX100. They are great with jazz.

Look to ebay for a pair, $55 shipped.

Thanks for the replies guys, i'll look into all of the above suggestions!

i have in mind a budget of 250 canadian and under...and obviously, would like something superior to my px100s--with soundstage being an important quality.

in anycase, i'll check the reviews and specs for all the suggested 'phones, but any other ideas?

ATH-W1000. They are absoutely amazing for every instrumental music, including jazz. The soundstage is reaaaly wide and you don't need amp. They are crisp and bright (but they don't sound cold) with lots of detail and also have nice sounding bass (not punchy).

Why don't you try a 32 ohm Beyer DT770/880/990 from Meier Audio? I don't know if they fit into your budget, but they'll run on anything and have great soundstage.
