Is there anything else on earth I could use? I thought I remember reading somewhere that someone else has developed an interface that would replace the Creative PlayCenter. Does anyone know anything about this?

There's NOTMAD at Redchair but I personally don't like it any more than the supplied software.

I did have some problems which seems to have been resolved withe the latest firmware upgrade to the player. Now I tend to use EAC/LAME for the extraction/ripping process and Playcentre to simply copy the files over using firewire - it seems to work well.

The NOMAD 3 is an excellent player - read my review on the Portable/Hardware section.
