i was wondering how the isolation of earphones, such as the ER-4 or ER-6 (35db?), compares with those of closed headphones, such as the HD280 Pro (32db). Does the ety significantly provide a quieter environment, or are they nearly the same?

I've never compared them, but I've read that the isolation phones are superior.

noise isolation phones are for blocking out all the sound from outside, to concentrate on playback/monitoring sound. noise canceling phones are for reducing low frequency noise and passing through human voices, mainly for airline use so that you won't miss "important announce".
