When I listen to CDs and movies on my Dell Latitude laptop, I can hear a high pitched whine/hiss/noise with my UM2s. It stops when I pause or stop the disc. Its almost like there is noise coming from the onboard DAC.

Has anyone else experienced this?

many laptops are just plain noisy. I suggest looking for an external solution.

If you have a docking station, try the audio out form that. I usually have better luck with the docking station.

Furthermore, UM2 is PARTICULARLY sensitive to pickin up those noises. I would also recommend getting an external soundcard (or carbus cards eg echo indigo if your laptop supports it). If you're on a budget, somthing like the TBAAM might also work although i haven't had any experience with it personally

Same situation here with Senn HD280's plugged directly into the headphone out of my Presario V6120. (Don't like IEM's, and I wanted a solution for watching movies at night in a noisy motel......so relatively low impedance closed phones seemed to be the best option as the notebook output doesn't drive hi-Z phones well.)

If I connect a PIMETA between the notebook and the Senn's, the noise remains, but at a much lower level.

Seems as if the lower the impedance connected to a notebook headphone output, the worse the problem.

The optimal solution is to get an external sound card.

If the noise is constant, like it won't get any louder if you turn up the volume, the cheap solution is to buy a rat-shack volume adapter. This is what I currently use with my laptop and docking station.
