I'm hosting competitive gaming events where players play on a stage, with casters providing commentary via the hall's sound system.
Since the players must not be able to hear the commentary, I'm looking for a headphone combination that blocks all external sound, even if it's loud.
Typically, players in such scenarios wear a combination of In-Ears, plus an Over-the-Ear Headset.
- For the In-Ears, it is important that they have replaceable silicon tips – as the players on stage change frequently, it's the only way to keep everything clean
Audio quality should also be good, as the game sound / music and optionally voice from the team mates all goes through there.
- For the Over-the-Ears, they don't necessarily have to be headphones at all. Hearing protection from Construction Site / Helicopter headsets / Shooting range is okay here. The goal is only to keep external sound out. If it's an actual headset with sound capabilities, it's also fine, but not necessary.
- Third, certain games require communication with team mates. Either the Over-the-Ears should include a microphone (that only captures sound from the direction of the mouth, and no ambience noise / caster commentary), or a third headset around the neck (similar to http://i.imgur.com/bX3w5zY.jpg)
