Is it absolutely neccessary to use a portable with a line out?

Will using the headphone jack on a portable REALLY degrade the sound?

The set-up will be PCDP>Straightwire mini to RCA>Grado RA-1>Grado RS1.

By the way,,,,,,,,I do intend to put this combo to better use with my home system once I get my new IC's.

IMO, it won't be as good as using a line out. But if that's all you have, that's all you have.
