Right now I am using crates but they look ugly to my taste, are there any classier LP storage solutions? Not whole shelves but crate type storage, maybe even coverable to close the LPs inside? Budget's probably $20-$50 per

Expedit is the name of them If i am correct.
buying&building the 4X4 box version was one of my projects during the outage.
it is TOTALLY sexxay.
if you are looking for individual crates that look better than milk crates, TTVJ has some, but they are kind of expensive.

Yes, use those. My cousin has about 6,000 LPs in them and they work fine. I'd use them, too, but I built my own rack instead.
I'll repeat the Expedit recommendation; it is an uncommonly cheap and good-looking solution. There is only one downside: Each cube "shelf" is only rated, IIRC, for 13 pounds. But one linear foot of vinyl is like 45 pounds! So, at the very least, only load vinyl on the bottom shelves first. And don't hold us liable if it fails on you (but I don't recall anybody having theirs fail).
That said, I have 6-7 shelves of a 4x4 full, and it's working great.
As nice and easy to deal with as those look...they are going to be far from ideal once you get a few thousand LPs or more. Something you can put from floor to ceiling, (shelves or stackable boxes) against a wall, or on there own, is the only way to go.
One or two of those to keep LPs in my listening room, and just change them out or add new unlistened to vinyl would be nice though.
