I sometimes while on travel use my Nexus 7 (2013) as a source component.  I use Spotify, Pandora, and TuneIn Radio and of course locally stored music.  Nexus 7 (depending on what custom ROM you use will also work with a USB DAC.  
 
I can use my HiFiMeDIY DAC with Cyanogenmod 11 and just recently Google released a preview of Android L which is the successor to KitKat Android. 
 
Out of the box Android L has DAC support which is a first for the stock Android kernel and while my HiFiMeDIY DAC doesn't seem to be supported my Fiio E17 and E07K are supported.
 
Nexus 7 with Fiio E07k is going to be a great system for the hotel room.
 
And as a source component doesn't sound bad at all.  Pretty good.

That's very good news indeed. So far on my Nexus 7, only USB Audio Player Pro (and Recorder Pro) are working on my FiiO E18.

What ROM are you running?  
 
I have a Nexus 7 2012 running USB ROM and connected to OTG Y cable that was source for a headphone amp (Bottlehead Crack) for a while.   I like the touchscreen interface  and it looked cool next to the amp however it with a HiFiMeDIY just didn't sound that great I didn't think.  Had to use the equalizer even then I didn't like it. 
 
However the Nexus 7 2013 running Android L with a Fiio E17 DAC sounded pretty good to these ears.  I really enjoyed the sound of it.

Running rooted stock 4.4.4 on both 2012 & 2013 versions. Only USB Audio Player Pro works on FiiO E18. On my LG G2 and HTC One X, any apps works.

On my Theorem 720, all devices mentioned only work with UAPP.

I gave up a while back on the platform for a home music server.  I used various ROM's with various kernels and if one would work on USB audio with a DAC it wouldn't work with my 3G dongle. 
 
Cyanogenmod 11 I think (haven't checked for a while) does it all.  Haven't tried the 3G dongle with Android L here but this is an audio board not a 3G USB board. 
 
Weird that the HiFiMeDIY DAC doesn't work as it has always worked on most other variants of Android I've tried (except stock).  I would never sit around home probably and listen to audio on the Nexus 7 anymore but laying back in the hotel room relaxing the Nexus 7 with USB DAC is a fine and pretty portable solution especially with a WiFI connection.

Pity that the implementation USB audio out on Android is very inconsistent from every brand, model and sometimes even ROM. I rarely use any of my N7 as music transport. LG G2 gets the most usage because it is more portable and I like moving around with my rig (even at home.) Not happy with some interference from time to time but until the Hidizs AP100 I have ordered yesterday arrived, this is my setup. LG G2 + FiiO E18 is quite a nice pairing but I like the SQ of the Theorem 720 more so the E18 had been donated to my wife...

While we're on the subject my Schiit Modi did not work.  Fiio E17 and E07K worked.  
 
Didn't check this on E07K but on E17 the volume on the Nexus had two settings, Off, and a push to increase gives you 100%.  Off or 100%.

I tried everything to get my n7 rev 2 to play nicely with the ifi nano idsd. After days of fiddling I only have it working with uapp. I'd really like to get it running with spotify as that's my primary source.

Any tips? I'm using Bruce's linaro build of cm11 as it was supposed to provide the best USB audio support.
