Roughly same type of sound, but overall better of for the most part better? I'd be willing to give up a little sound stage for more musicality, not too much though

This is my first set of mid-fi hp's I just got a week ago and I'm already looking to move up the food chain. 50% games/35% music/15% movies

*whoops

without a budget, im going to recommend the AD2K's. overall much more refined, yet with a somewhat similar flavoring. further extended and tighter bass, much faster perceived transients. worth the cash, especially for how cheap (relatively) theyve been selling for on the used market

musicality? thats a subjective word. The ad700s are the most musical sounding cans in that price level IMO. Musicality is based on ones taste IMO. Just depends on what type of sound you want. Try an sr80i for a change. You might even like them much more than the ATs. Or If you want something of a compromise between the grado and AT try sennheiser 555s. After that, build and upgrade on what makes you enjoy the music more. If senns come out to be the most musical for you... Upgrade in that ladder, get hd650s for example.

Assuming you can't afford, or don't want to pay for the AD2000, the HD600/DT880/K601/K701/ESW10/SA5000 can be considered. But I do think that if you are looking to give up a little sound stage for more musicality the AD2000 is easily what you are looking for.

I will look into these thanks. The faster transients has me intrigued.

Lol yeah I'm having a hard time describing sound but the more I read the more sense the terms make. If I do move up I think I'll just jump straight to the 650's and try them out. I heard that Grado's are kind of in your face so I may want to avoid that, one thing I'm really enjoying about the AD-700 is that it doesn't sound like the music is right inside of my head but slightly to the outside.

Man I really wish there was a place to try these out. Do you guys know of any chains that carry demo's of these cans?

Also it seems I'm sensitive to harsh highs, but I like detail. Is this a double edge sword in cans or is there cans with good detail and not harsh? The AD-700 seems to be right on the threshhold for me it really depends on the source though, as some sources sound VERY good but others seem to give me a headache.

hmm you really have to try senns then. they are detailed yet not bright. Try the hd600 and hd650 and see if you like any of them. Heck go for the hd800
