Why are headphones also called cans? My gf asked me that and I can't answer it...

I assume because of the shape of the cups are similar to the shape of cans. Well that's what I've always thought at least.

This is my thinking as well. It's probably also because some of the 'phones in use today are as big as some types of cans.
