Hell no. They're way too uncomfortable - they clamp too hard.

If you're looking for decently noise-attenuating headphones - Beyerdynamic DT770/80 (the common one out now). They're superb headphones in every respect, ideal for gaming, movies... even classical.

And unlike the HD280 Pro's, they have bass as well. And yes, I do happen to own both... if you want a new(ish - worn two days and in box now) HD280 Pro's, though, let me know

Quite so. A Miles Davis fan with HD280s or Hiphop listener with DT880s should be very misequipped.

I honestly believe that for the genres you've listed and the fact that you don't have an amp, the DT770/80 would be a fine choice. They were my first pair of "real" headphones, and I didn't have an amp for them at first. I listened straight out of my X-Fi Xtreme Music's headphone out.

They really sound nice with pop music, video games, and movies. For around $150 USD, you'll be satisfied. Plus, if you ever step up to a DAC and Amp out of your PC, you'll have a set of cans that are worthy of being amped. They sound good unamped, but an amp will help to push them to their max.

At times their recessed mids can be annoying, but that is more a function of the music that I like to listen to. I don't really enjoy the DT770/80 with metal or grunge - basically anything that has wailing, saw-edge guitars. Also, if you listen to a lot of stuff purely for the vocals, then you might be bummed. However, I am really fussy about my preferences, so many would find me nit-picky. I just want to give you the straight up and not the fanboy hype. Sometimes I can fall into the fanboy hype thing.

i would really insist you to get the koss and just headband mod them. if you really do not want to, get the hd 280 pro. The bass will complement your type of music because it is what I use and we have similar tastes in music.

Hmm I guess it's down between the MS-1 and HD-280s then. The DT770s do sound like a good pair of headphones but $150 USD is way out of my budget... $99 for the MS-1 is already pushing it for me.

Okay I think I'm actually going to decide between the 280s and the KSC-75 since I really don't think I can afford to spend $100 on headphones.

Anyone know how the KSC-75 stacks up to the 280s in the type of music I listen to?

IMO for hip-hop you can't go wrong with a HD485, HD515 (no really), K81DJ, or HD555. Depends on how much you want to spend from there.

For some characteristics:
HD485 -- Killer bass, lack mids, highs are upfront.
HD515 -- Killer bass, mids sound weird, highs are neutral.
K81DJ -- Killer bass, acceptable mids, highs are a bit weird.
HD555 -- Good bass, good overall presentation of both mids and highs, maybe a bit muffled.

IMO you'd do best going with the 485 or 555, since the 515 and K81DJ have faults in other areas of the genres you mentioned.

And add the KSC75 to whatever else you are getting, it's only $20, but sounds five times that amount.

And the HD280-Pro flat out sucks for hip-hop IMO.

I would consider the Equation Audio RP-21 or the more portable(smaller) RP-15. I have been listening to headphones for over 10 years now and the RP-21's, which I only discovered a month ago, have brought another level of listening satisfaction to this great hobby. I wanted to reply to you as you said you were a newbie to headphones. The Equations are a very good IMO bang for the buck and beyond.

well, why dont you try to see smt like Alessandro MS-1 or ATH ES7??

And MS-1 is still great with your kind of music - believe me, I own a pair of those and I listen to that on them too! (yes, they are not the greatest, but for their price they so quite well all kinds of music!)

for HD280 vs ES7 try to look into here
