Hello everyone,
I just discovered this site a couple of days ago and I've been reading a lot of great stuff on here. I didn't want to be on of those people who just posted their question, which is probably answered somewhere already, because I was too lazy to look for it.
I've read a lot of threads including the buying guides stickied to the homepage. I think I've narrowed my selection down to (3) devices and I'd like your guys opinion on which I should choose. I've got another head-fi tab open with the dictionary, so I can try and describe things as best as I possibly can. Bear with me if I sound like an idiot, though.
Okay, I believe the (3) devices I have it narrowed down to are:
1) Sony MDRZX700
2) Sennheiser HD 4.30i
3) Audio-Technica ATH-M50x Professional
Currently, I'm listening to music with my apple ear buds, either through my computer or through my 80gb, 5th generation iPod. I listen to .mp3 currently. Just found out about this FLAC thing. Total noob, huh?
I listen to a wide range of musical styles, including: Classic Rock, Modern Rock/Metal, Blues, Country, Jazz, Alternative, etc... Some of the bands I like are: Linkin Park (older stuff), Disturbed, Guns & Roses, Ed Sheeran, Black Eyed Peas, Gary Allen, Lindsey Stirling, 3 Days Grace, 21 Pilots, Chili Peppers, etc... That's just to give you an idea.
What I'm looking for is a circumaural around ~$100. All of the headphones I listed fall in that price range, wih the ATH-M50x being the highest. I need a decent amount of isolation, because I plan to use these while being a passenger in a car and more frequently, when listening to music or movies on my laptop.
I need something that'll be comfortable with long listen periods. I worry that the Sennheiser will make my head hot. I've heard that can be an issue but I don't know how warm it actually gets. I went into this process with the assumption that I'd get Sennheiser or Bose. Mostly because I've always heard them associated with quality music. However, after reading a lot of info, I kind of like the reviews on the Sony. It's also the cheapest. One day, when I learn more, I'd like to get a nice audio setup in my home, but for now, it's going to be a set that sound really nice when listening to .mp3 on an ipod or the pc.
My brother bought a set of Beats Solo's. I asked to borrow them and played a few songs to test it's range. I didn't think to look for sound samples. I tried playing "I see fire" by Ed Sheeran, because of the higher end in that song and I also played a few rock songs with some bass. I switched back and forth between my iPod Earbuds and the Solos. What I found was that the Solos had more bass, but it was Muddy, I believe the word is. It just vibrated in my ear and sounded distorted. Also, the highs on the Ed Sheeran song, sounded better and more clear on the earbuds.
My cousin bought a set of Bose QC25's. These sounded good, but I don't remember being impressed with the high end or the low end when I listened to them. I didn't expect to have to remember my impressions and it's been a while, but that's what I remember. They had pretty good isolation, though. I could barely hear people having a conversation. It was like wearing ear muffs. The clamping pressure felt firm, but light enough that it wouldn't be uncomfortable for long periods of time.
When I'm out on the mower or tractor, I put my iPod in my pocket, put my ear buds in, then put a pair of $2 harbor freight earmuffs over my ears. This works great and allows me to listen with out blowing my ear drums out to hear it, but after about 3hrs, it starts to hurt my ears by pressing on them. They're supposed to be cirumarual, but they end up pressing on your ears a little.
Lastly, I do like to listen to music at a moderate volume. My dad always made me wear hearing protection since I was little, because he'd damaged his. I used to ride with kids who would turn it up and it'd hurt my ears. I like to listen at that moderate volume, but I still like to feel the music. I like it when the bass rumbles a little. I like it on that "I see fire" song where he goes high with his voice, too. Depending on how I listen to it, those things either sound flat and wimpy, which I don't want, or they sound like they have some body. I really don't know how else to describe it. I guess it's like the difference of listening to it play on the TV in the other room and being at the concert, if that makes sense. It's just kind of background noise one way and it makes you feel something when it's the other way.
So if anyone can recommend which one of these (3) headsets would be a better fit for me, that would be amazing. You're free to suggest another that I don't know about as well, but I'm really leaning toward the Sony. I think the Sennheiser would be nice, but I think it might get warm. They also said the ear holes were a little small. I don't really know anything about the AudioTechnicas, but I hear they're good. Thanks for the help.
