Hey all,

Just started listening to jazz. So far I have Miles Kind of Blue, and Diana Krall When I look in your eyes and I love both. I came across these two albums based on recommendations here on the board. Now I need more recommendations. I want to know representative/comprehensive albums of Nat King Cole, John Coltrane and Ella Fitzgerald. If I only get one album for each of these artists, which one should I get?

Also I am looking for any Nat King Cole CD that contains the song, Aquellos Ojos Verdes. So far I can only find it on the soundtrack for the HK movie In the Mood for Love. Although it's a good soundtrack, I really don't feel like buying a CD for one song...

Thanks in advance!

theres a bit of a standard list of albums to get for Jazz newbies, so besides what you already got:

John Coltrane - Blue Train or A Love Supreme
Thelonious Monk - Straight, No Chaser
Billy Cobham - Spectrum (jazz fusion)
Stan Getz & Charly Byrd - Jazz Samba

well, there lots more, but thats the best ones I actually have (aside from a couple more Coltrane albums and some more modern stuff), and can highly recommend.

you might want to use the search function for "jazz newbie", cause there have been quite a few threads with such recommendations. might have been a thread on those specific artists your looking for.

Another standard you might want to get is Dave Brubeck's Time Out

. This comes highly recommended by many many people.

Oh and are you the same Habib plays Q3?

I would recommend The Dave Brubeck Quartet's Time Out also. It's really good and is one of the first few Jazz albums that I really enjoyed. BTW where did you find the In The Mood for Love OST? I can't seem to find it on HMV I love that Cello song.

Coltrane--Anything on Atlantic (My Favorite Things, Coltrane Sound, and especially Giant Steps)..

Ella--Live in Berlin (great version of "Mack the Knife")

Okay.. if we stick to only few names you mentioned... actually some albums from posts above are all essential

Okay..

John Coltrane : Blue Train, or Giant Steps would be good start
Ella Fitgerald : .. I seem to like Speak Love (with Joe Pass) or Clap Hands; Here comes Charlie

Hello:

I see several recomendations for John Coltrane "Giant Steps", I would suggest "My Favorite Things", just seems more aproachable to a beginner. I would also recomend a good book, like the AMG (all music guide) to Jazz. If you don't want to buy, most libraries have this, gives a nice intro to each artist, and then rates all of the albums. I found this a great help as I was getting into jazz and finding out what I liked.

I am trying to stick with just these artists because I don't want to venture too far just yet. Also the reason I need specific album advice is because I primarily shop at used CD store. And that's the best way to find the CD I want instead of blind buy.

I tried to use the search function using the names of artists I am looking for but didn't really come up with any definitive answers for the ones I mentioned

In the Mood for Love soundtrack can be purchased from Amazon. Overall it's a good soundtrack, but I really just want that one song...

Nanahachi: I am still looking for a cheap amp... so I am not just done yet. Do you go to UC Berkeley?

Thanks again!

I agree completely. Also try the Penguin Jazz guide.

But not the one who played Quake? (I can't imagine there being too many "Habib's")

My interest with this thread is growing as well... when I recover from tuitionpaymentitis I'll have to follow up on some of the suggestions others have made

No one has yet to give me a Nat King Cole Album, I am looking to get one of the two here:

Nat King Cole After Midnight Sessions
Nat King Cole Trio: Instrumental Classics

The Instrumental Classics is suppose to showcase his skills as a pianoist. Anyone mind to comment on these?
