I have a PC with an old Soundblaster Audigy 2 soundcard. I run my headphones from it mainly for convenience as I am always on the computer! I have images of my best music CD's stored on my hard drive and prefer this to lower quality MP3's. I can still easily make my own compilations from these. The sound is ok, but I would like to somehow improve on this. I have a feeling that the only way is forward is to not use the PC and go for a headphone amp and a new source. My current headphones are Sennheiser HD650's.

The Sennheiser Hd650, and any headphones that price range really benefit from a good source and amp. I would say but a DAC and an amp. Your system would look like this:
Audigy 2->DAC->AMP->HD650s.
