check it out. i found this link on hydrogen audio and thought some people here would enjoy it. most of the people on slashdot condoned it as a hoax, but then the guy posted his source code so who knows. listen to the files he made, it sounds pretty nuts..

either way, judging from the pictures and the files i think he really needs to clean his vinyl.

I read a report on a demonstration of record player with a laser that reads the grooves on LPs, with a tangential arm (think it was in Hifi News). I think the groove modulation must be sampled and then D/A converted. Why not? An obvious advantage is that there is no wear on the LPs.

Yeah I read that on Slashdot a few days ago -
The consensus there seemed to be that it was a fake. The guy won't realease the code. Why not?
Wouldn't it be easier to just record the song and add some static?

There's an old archive thread around either here or on Head-Wize that discusses the laser turntable you speak of. It actually was first shown 15 or more years ago at the Consumer Electronics shows in Las Vegas and Chigaco and I believe was called something like the "Finnial" or "Finneal" turntable. I saw & heard it demoed, and it it did indeed work. However it cost around $40,000 or $50,000 way back then. It made a reappearance about 2 years ago at a lower price, but I haven't heard anything about it since.
