New vs Old RS-1... a Pictorial

I happened to acquire a pair of old school RS-1's in almost NOS condition. Thought I'd share some pics of how things used to be, not really even that long ago.

First you got a real wwod box with RS-1's...

The foam was even topped with a nice felt.

The headband was a softer brown leather and the L and R markers were in gold (hard to tell by pic) rather than the later silver. I believe flat pads were stock rather than bowls.

Compared to the newer RS-1 with black headband and silver L and R.

What the heck, while I'm showing old school and doubles, throw in some HP-2's...

The two RS-1's sound similar, but haven't done any serious head to head as of yet. I actually think the older ones haven't been used enough, if at all, to be burned in. Since I may be looking to trade them off at some point for something I want (HE or O/O2), I'll just leave them boxed for now. Lesson over...

Just out of curiosity, were these the phones that went on EBAY recently for $735. I was a bidder, at an early stage, but dropped out after the $525 mark. Obviously, I didn't realize what I was bidding on...

Why would you pay more for them just becaus they have a brown headband and a wooden box? I mean, if you pay me 777USD ill buy you new RS-1s and make u a nicer looking box

Looks like you have the earlier wooden box.Mine has different lettering on,a different catch and slightly different construction.

Also are the black caps on the ends of the rods machined metal?I've had RS-1's with those and also with rubber caps and hard plastic like the PS-1's.

Yes, latch, dovetails and lettering, even wood all look different. My hinges look like your latch. I believe the end caps are rubber. Headband is the soft variety brown.
