New V Moda Crossfade M100 Master
Jul 11, 2019 at 11:44 PM Post #16 of 208
has been running for 7 years, and has more than 20,000 posts.

Well over 7 thousands posts before anyone even got them!! Most of them more concerned about customising their shields and wings when they should have been worried about how they would sound.

The most over hyped headphone ever, and possibly the worst headphone ever for the price.

Are you sure? The topic thread for the original M-100s has been running for 7 years, and has more than 20,000 posts.

Or, do you mean that more people on Head-Fi dislike them than like them?

Their newer offerings seems to have gotten average reviews and many complaints. It seems like this update won't have near the hype or success of the original.

Yeah, in terms of my tastes, there just hasn't been much happening in the headphone world these last few years (other than the subsequent versions of my app that I've put out!)

Wireless, planar magnetics, and DAC-amps are all that seem to be new lately.

I think V-Moda should focus on taking the same sound of the original M-100, and putting out a new headphone with more power handling, more sensitivity (especially in the sub-bass region), more X-max, etc. Same portability, same durability, same style, same sound quality, etc., but with more volume gain!

But instead, V-Moda seems to be trying to pursue the hardcore audiophile route, which I think is a mistake. The brand should be focused on hardcore bassheads like me who also crave good sound quality, convenience and portability, durability, etc.

I could care less about "Hi-Res Audio" stickers, and 40,000 Hz.

Worse value than Beats??? :fearful:

Oh well...looks like you and I have very different tastes, so I guess one man's trash is another man's treasure.

So, tell me, did you ever have a big, loud, thumpin' system in your car when you were younger? I did for a long time, and during these last 4 years, it's been an amazing feat for me to bring back that good ol' sound...but without the huge hassles and utterly crazy expenses of car stereos.

In old tradition I just ordered my pair of the M-100 Master. Having used the original quite a bit (and enjoyed it despite wishing for less midbass), I just have to try out this variants of as well.

I own the CF2 Codex as well, and use it at work quite often. I just like it’s non-audiophile sound, it’s fun and engaging and fits my musical preferences well.

Congrats! Feel free to let us know what you think of them.

Tracking info says mine should be coming today so I'm pretty excited.

Just received my pair this afternoon.
Here are a few pictures of the unboxing.
I've always loved v-moda's packaging.

Not really - I like a boosted bass responce. Just not V-Moda's interpretation of it.

Do yourself a favour;

Or if your dead set on V-Moda try to find some M80's. Best headphone they made - must have been a fluke. I own them and they are on par with my Beyerdynamic T51's.

I agree that the X00 sounds significantly better, but they are in a different price bracket (especially the PH) and much less durable. If you look at the X00 wrong it will brake. Maybe I'm just a hack, but I can't be the only one that thinks the M100 is much more durable for portable use. I always thought the M100 sounded kind of like a mini, less detailed and exciting X00, with added portability and durability.

I disagree the M80 sounded better. No way. Not for me anyways. It's not even close. I agree with Z's review of the M100 and M80. I like the HD 25 better than M80.

I like the old M100, and I may buy the new version depending on what the reviews say, or just buy an old one when they go on sale for $150.

Yeah, the V Moda design and construction is very durable. I've had an LP2 for about 6 years and my roommate has been using them every day, almost all day for 3 of them. The pleather on the headband is peeling and the ear cushions and wire have had to be replaced, but they still work, and they're still pretty solid.

I got a chance to listen to the LP2 and compare it to the M100 Master. I'd say compared to the LP2, it sounds much clearer and less muddy. It has just as much punch and the bass goes nice and deep in songs like 'Savant on Mushrooms' but it's still able to sound good with stuff like Passenger. Pretender by the foo fighters sounded a bit distant compared to other headphones I've listened to, but all in all, I'm pretty happy with the sound thus far.

As far as comfort is concerned, they're fine. I prefer my sony wh1000xm3 because I can wear those for hours without thinking about it. The M100 Masters seem to make my ears sore after 2 to 3 hours though. I think this could by solved by the xl pads though. That said, I'm wondering why they didn't just ship them with those pads in the first place. Is there anyone who even likes the stock ones on v moda headphones?

I always thought the V Moda was somewhat uncomfortable after about an hour as well, I was hoping they changed this with the new headband or whatever. Hopefully the old ones go on sale for $150, which I think is a good deal for them as an "on the go" headphone you're not wearing for more than an hour at a time.

My real question, is what is better than them in this price range for portability, durability, and sound quality? I could care less about looks and the hot stuff design.

Well...the more I read from V-Moda's website about the new M-100, the less optimistic I am. (I hope someone can prove me wrong, though.)

Not a peep on V-Moda's website about the new M-100 having any better power handling, greater driver-excursion capability, nor any better sub-bass sensitivity, than the original M-100.

It only says, "The re-engineered driver cover enhances driver stability, for the structural integrity to manage a vast tonal range."

That's all.

As I said before, I'm really disappointed in the direction that V-Moda has gone in recent years. They seem to have forgotten about us extreme bassheads. (Again...I hope someone can prove me wrong about this.)

That's how I'm feeling right now. :worried:

I remember several years ago when Val Kolton (plus other V-Moda reps) used to frequent the Head-Fi forums a lot, answering questions and getting feedback. But...not anymore. :disappointed:

Having used the original quite a bit (and enjoyed it despite wishing for less midbass)...

When I got my first pair of M-100s four-and-a-half years ago, I also disliked the midbass/lower midrange bloat on a lot of songs and albums. On those songs, that would really kill off the detail and soundstage.

However...

If you ever get your hands on an iPod Classic, you'll have to install Rockbox firmware on it, and then DiscoProJoe's Rockbox EQ Presets that I've developed and improved since the spring of 2015! When choosing a preset, you'll first select a midbass category, then a treble subcategory, and finally, a sub-bass increment...to match the song that's playing. The five main midbass categories are called, "Ultra Lite," "Lite," "Cool," "Hot," and "Wicked."

When choosing the right preset for the song that's playing, the midbass/lower-mid bloat is totally gone -- and with boosted sub-bass throbbing at the same time -- with nice detail and soundstage to go with it.

It sounds so awesome I actually traveled to the 2017 New York spring meetup and showed it off to everyone -- including Jude Mansilla!

(And that was with Version 4.1 of my app. Since late 2017, Version 5.0 has been the one in vogue.)

Is there anyone who even likes the stock ones on v moda headphones?

For me...so far so good with the stock pads on the original M-100. The good air seal around the ears, along with the resulting smaller earcup enclosure space (due to the smaller pads), seem to enable the excellent sub-bass sensitivity and SPL that the original M-100 has.

It starts getting a little uncomfortable for my earlobes after an hour-and-a-half or so, but it's usually not too bad.

I think I've figured out the comfort problem. I had the headband adjusted too small.
Lowering the ear cups on my ears made a world of difference.

I'm also finding that these do benefit greatly from a good source. Using a Hidizs Sonata sounds much better than the internal audio hardware on my note 9 and my thinkpad.
