Hi,

I've followed this board for some time but haven't goten up the nerve to post till now. I love all things musical. I've been a member of the NY Philharmonic Orchestra since 1972. I enjoy listening to Classical and Jazz and have Grado RS-1 and Sennheiser HD 600 headphones. I enjoy both and haven't decided which I prefer. Anyway, I look forward to meeting many of you. Any othere "Newbies" out there?

Hey there. Welcome.

So, what gear do you hook your HD600s and RS-1s into?

You have a heck of a lot of nice stuff for a newbie. Exactly how long have you been lurking?

Welcome to Head-fi, a-m. You'll find newbies as well as old farts like joelongwood (

) that share your love for music and headphones.

This is truly a site for all ages...

edit: ok, ok...like me and joelongwood...

And me too.
Welcome amadeus-mozart! Are your 600s stock or have they been "hot-rodded" with an aftermarket cable? Also, I'm curious, assuming you use either your RA-1 or your Cosmic, which do you prefer with each can and why?

Cheers and again, welcome to Head-Fi!

Welcome, AM. I believe Spad is a conductor, so it will be interesting to follow your dialogues as they relate to music.

Welcome to Head-Fi.

Some time ago in a Galaxy Far Far away-I noticed lurking can be injurious to your pocketbook...

I started following Head-Fi about a year ago when I was thinking about updating my exceptionally cruddy "Walkman" headphones. I found so much info on Headphones/HiFi that my head was doing flip-flops. Anyway I figured that I couldn't go too far wrong if I got Grado SR-60's. I ordered them from Headroom. When I got them I couldn't believe my ears- to me they were the greatest thing since Beethoven and apple pie.

After this I started reading about PCDPs tried to get the best sounding one I could. I'm still working on this one.

I seem to be leaning toward the Sennheiser HD600, Headroom Cosmic/ref combination. I love the Grado line (especially RS-1's) but find them sometimes to be just "honest" (revealing?) for some recordings. I don't know if this is coloration... to me it's like a great violin- some are brighter, darker, more powerful, etc. If one were fortunate to hear 3 Stradivarius Violins live each would sound different. Neither is wrong.. or colored. Just different- each in its own unique and beautiful way.

To me greatest thing about the Grados is that they make you feel like you're right up there on stage during the performance. They seem to be very dependent on your source recording and related equipment. The perspective of the Senns seem to be a bit more distant and silvery. The Senns seem to make marginal recordings sound better. I think both the Senns and Grados are beautiful "instruments of sound" that vary tonally in the same way Strad or Guarneri Violin might.
