I'm tired of wasting my money on crappy $20 headphones that break after a month and sound terrible, so I want to get myself a good pair.

My budget is only around $100-$200, so I'm not expecting the best possible quality, just something that'll make me happy.

I'd prefer closed headphones since I plan on taking these to college next year, and I don't want to bother my roommate with music in the middle of the night. I was considering Grado SR80s, but read about the open sound - is the open sound bad enough to make a big distraction to other people in a room?

Thanks in advance for any help.

I owned the sr80s and yeah they're pretty annoying if you 're going to be playing stuff in the middle of the night, but i guess it's a little dependent on how you're going to be blasting stuff

if comfort's not the biggest issue, you can't go wrong with k81s whihc run about 60 - 70

otherwise for a little more you can bump yourself up to audio technica A900s

I also hear equation rp-21 is nice?

I think I've changed my mind and will look more into open designs. I figure if I'm leaking too much sound, I can always turn down the volume.

I'm thinking of either going with the SR 80s or Senn HD555s.

I had the MS1s which have the same design as the Grados, and I thought that I leaked too much at night, plus it's no fun, to me, to listen to music at a low volume. I suggest you look at the RP-15s/RP-21s from Equation Audio. K81s are great, but it's on the ear and it hurts mine after 5 hours, that's when it is really stretched out. Other options are the ES7s from Audio Technica or the DT770, 80ohm version. These are all closed alternatives.

HD-280 are great. They don't have a warm, rich sound signature, but have excellent clarity and deep bass. Sound find to me!

Let's say at a moderate volume, was the leak really noticeable from across a room?

Open cans WILL bother someone trying to concentrate on listening, reading, or sleeping!!

I'd suggest MDR-V6 as a good first closed, portable can.... it's very durable, mostly neutral sound with great bass and highs (mids are a tad recessed)... folds up nicely, and it's comfortable to boot. Price is around $75.

DT770 (huge bass) or RP-21 are prolly better sounding cans, but aren't nearly as portable. ES7 is certainly portable, but prolly not as durable as the V6.

If you're ever interested in open cans... try KSC-75 (~$17) or MS-1 ($100)... you won't be disappointed with either one.

yeah I was considering getting the MS1s.

The DT770s are a bit more than I really want to spend. I'll check out the V6s and RP21s.

i think rp-21 is a good buy too, same price as ms-1, you should take in for consideration

i heard that most forummer claimed that audio technica Axxx series are pretty bad, try some ADxxx series if you ca, but these are open phone.

I think audio technica ATH-es7 is great looking phone , it's closed too.SQ wise, never test it before.
