First post!

Anywho, been lurking and reading every now and again. Really interested in getting a good set of cans, building a cMoy to power them etc.. etc.. Don't have too much money at the moment, the cans I am currently using are some old Realistic Nova 40s. They sound pretty good to me, not sure how they compare to the lower end cans I have been looking at (SR-60s, 80s). Any opinions? Would it be best to keep these and build a cMoy to power them instead of buying some SR-60s or 80s?

Show me the LIGHT!

Looking forward to a true hi-fi experience.

I have no idea what your headphones are, but the SR60 is probably better. It won't need an amp, but it will suck you in. Another choice would be the $50 Sennheiser PX100 if you want things bassier, but it's slightly lower quality.

First off, welcome to Head-Fi. You could help us all out by listing some music preferences as well as what sound signature you are looking for. That would help people make better recommendations for you. The cheap recommendations people would usually make would be the Koss KSC75s, Koss Portapros, Sennheiser PX100s, Grado SR60, AKG K81DJ, and many more.

Well, I listen to everything from metal, to hip-hop, to electronica and everything in between. Not sure what you mean by sound signature, but I prefer things a little bass heavy. Anywho, just ordered a Sansa e250 (was on sale for $54.99 with shipping) so a cheap good sounding set of cans that will sound good through that.

If you like metal than you will like the SR60s. I'm listening to Slipknot - The Heretic Anthem and I love to listen to my Grados for this song. Much luck to you and sorry about your wallet.

man, you really seem to get into this, so take this advice (it comes for free

):

if you want some start rather small jump, not to get TOO excited, grab px100, they can be find in ebay for little $$

then go into something like Grado SR60 OR alessandro music series 1 - try to read about which one is better for your music preferences,

then try some closed decent cans (like ES7, for instance)

and then, rock your wallet as you pleased!!

Maybe a Senn HD485? (for open) Not exactly portable though.

If you want something closed I'd think an AKG K81DJ would do nicely. I have both an iPod and a SanDisk player and they output fine through both of them. Seem to display your tastes.

True!

I also recommend the SR-60s as a great entry into good headphones. If my boss hadn't swiped mine, I'd still be using them, even though I've moved on to other cans.

Koss KSC75 for portable........and Grado SR60 for home.

If you need isolation from noise... JVC Marshmallows are a cheap buy.
I use Sony EX71 for isolation from noise when i go on a train etc.

But if you like less highs, and more bass.....the the Sennheiser PX100's might be what you want in a portable headphone.

Also the Koss Pro35 at Radioshack (same as Pro1 from Koss) might be a good can for ya. Same drivers as the KSC75,but in a different housing and pressed tighter to your head for more bass.

I like the SR-80 for the bowl pads and the four conductor cable.

....but then again; I like bowl pads and four conductor cables.

Hey! Bowl pads and four conductor cables are used on all the higher Grados and Alessandros! What's not to like!
