New to being a audiophile, looking for a better bass headphone however, any suggestions? (Have AD700x)

Hi there, 
 
So I'm very new to the world of quality audio gear.  Currently I have a pair of AD700x's and I love them for their fantastic mids and treble, plus their gaming capability! The sound in game is just so great and makes playing FPS games more enjoyable along with making for better games. However I mostly listen to Rock, Metalcore, Country, and a little dubstep and pop. 
Bands like: Memphis May Fire, Hands like Houses, Of Mice and Men, Stick to Your Guns, A Day to Remember, Zack Brown Band, Crown the Empire, ect.. However for my taste I would like more bass for my headphones and preferably a pair of cans that isn't so big!
 
I've heard everyone talk about Grado's excessively, so if anyone knows whats the bass on those are like, would love to hear your thoughts. But the uses for this new pair is just for around the house, on the bus/planes, and most my general listening since my AD700x's are connected to a mic with my computer.
 
Overall I am looking for a pair of cans that have very similar mids and treble while delivering more bass, my budget is about $225
 
Also a side note, is a amp really worth it?

Grados are kind of the opposite of bass heavy.
 
Look at the Beyerdynamic DT770s, Shure SRH840, Audiotechnica ATH-M50, Koss PortaPro DJ and VModa M100s for bass heavy headphones.
 
Also find the buyer's guides on this site (there are a few of them listed in the full sized headphones forum at the top) and see what catches your eye in your price range.

Whether an amp is worth it or not depends on the headphones and the source you are using. With some power-hungry 'phones, it is not only worth it - it is mandatory in order to get any decent level of volume from the 'phones. Other 'phones, like some very efficient IEMs, will send a high gain amp into clipping and distortion and you really can't use them together. Most "audiophile" full-size headphones will work well with an amp, and the amp will help to bring out some detail at both the bottom and top of the response.

You should read about Yamaha HPH-200. They are open back headphones with compact design and really warm (but detailed) sound signature. They don't need extra amplification.
