My new Meridian 507 arrived today and it is now in the first few hours of burn in. I think I will give it maybe 72 hours before I do any critical listening. Out of the box I do hear the magic that sold me on the Meridian at the last Chicago meet. More to follow later.

Congrats. I've had my 507 since about May and I like it a lot. Do give it a lot of burn-in time. Meridians are bad for that.

There is a bit of a gap between CD players from $1500 to $3500. I wasn't willing to spend much more than the 507's price tag on a CD player. CD isn't going anywhere any time soon but I'd rather get one last decent player and worry about saving up for the winner of the format wars.

That's great, john_jcb!

If possible, let us know your impressions vis-a-vis track 3 on the Gladiator soundtrack, compared to your other sources.

Congrats John. That looks like a really sweet source. Be sure to post impression after sufficient time for burn-in, and just listening.

You have a good memory. I have also listened to that track a couple of times on the Meridian 508 with headphones and speakers and the distortion of the loud deep bass I heard on the 963SA was not there. I actually briefly listened to Gladiator last night and did not hear it on the 507 either. I got distracted listening to a Diana Krall live recording and time slipped away. Before I knew it it was time for bed.

Sam Adams says: Meridian -- always the right choice.

I think you've made a really great choice. I've had my Meridian now for a while and I've been happy with it, to say the least. Have fun!

The burn in process is near completion I think.

Yesterday I played the 507 alongside a much more expensive 508. We used 2 identical CD's that were synced as close as we could. For an amp we tried the Wheatfield HA-2 with some very good NOS tubes and the Emmeline HR-2. A switch was used to go between sources. Headphones were RS-1's, CD-3000's and HD-600 w/Cardas.

We listened to both players for almost an hour switching amps and headphones. The switch really made it nice to change sources. This was by no means an extended comparison but I must say we were unable to tell the players apart. I am sure if I did some long term critical listening some differences might emerge.

The Meridian is now in the number one spot, the 963SA is number 2 and the Sony NS500V in 3rd downstairs for DVD viewing. The Phillips and Sony may be switched in a few days as the 963 video section cannot be beat.

Back to more music.

John.....
I am glad that my wife does not give me the ultimatom of choosing between her & my audio gear. I wouldn't know what the choice would be, I hope she does not read this, or I will be sleeping in the Garage with my Audio toys.
I am happy that you have purchased a well respected audio components in the world of HI-END audio. It is just pleasent to listen to Meridian CD players. Now, Fred & I have to get you into some Vinyl with good turntable & you will be set for life. Who would need kids or wife after that.
Happy listening.
