New Sony Walkman NW-A300 Series (Android 12)

3.01.00 firmware seems to be strictly security upgrade, I didn't notice any functionality changes. After the upgrade, Sony Walkman Player app remained at version 3.0.4. Android security upgrade date shifted to October 5, 2024, Kernel version changed to 4.19.157-perf+ (Fri Dec 13 20:48:14 CST 2024). Google Play system update date remained November 1, 2023.

Does anyone have a link on what bloatware to clear out since people have said they’re worried about privacy concerns and I don’t blame them?

I have great experience with the next generation version of the debloater: https://github.com/Universal-Debloater-Alliance/universal-android-debloater-next-generation/

I have fully debloated and degoogled my Japanese A307, it is so fast and battery efficient now. From the "Recommended" list I uninstalled all packages except for the Google Files app. From the "Advanced" list I uninstalled all except for the Google Keyboard app. From "Expert", you may uninstall the Wireless Emergency Alert app. If you have the Japanese version, you may uninstall the Japanese stuff from "Unlisted" list.

If you're interested, I can post my complete debloat guide updated for 3.01.00 firmware.

Yes, please. I would be thankful for the guide. I appreciate anything in advance.

Does anyone have tips making Edifier Connex compatible with the NW-A306/307? Despite being on Android 12, it says I can't install it. Is there a workaround so I can use my Stax Spirit S5?

My recommended Walkman Music player app:

Playback range: Selected range (plays only current album, does not continue with next album)
Artist list display: Album artist (compilation albums don't split to multiple albums by individual song artists)

Tips:
The application follows the sorting by albumsort tag. If you want to sort albums by artist first, then by year, as Apple iTunes (Music) does, for example, I recommend tagging all tracks with an abumsort tag of the form "albumartist - date - album", for example "Jethro Tull - 1971 - Aqualung".

The application accepts album covers in external jpg files but a bit unusually it ignores files folder.jpg and cover.jpg used by many other apps. Sony Walkman app only accepts files that are named exactly the same as the parent folder plus extension .jpg. For example if you have your MP3/FLAC/DSF files in folder /sdcard/music/Jethro Tull/1971 - Aqualung/*.flac, the cover file must be named "1971 - Aqualung.jpg".

If you want see release year in the album view, you must add the release year to the album tag.

DSF files artist sorting differs from FLAC files. Album artist information is expected in performer tag instead of albumartist tag.

Is it possible to get Edifier Connex before doing the above or doing a different step prior to the above?

Here is my optimisation guide for NW-A306/A307. Mine is Japanese uncapped version. I only use the device for offline playback, I do not use any online services nor streaming apps. Your needs may be different.

I use Universal Android Debloater Next Generation to uninstall apps from Android. I assume you have the application already installed on your PC. See https://github.com/Universal-Debloater-Alliance/universal-android-debloater-next-generation/ for instructions.

Upgrade your DAP to the latest firmware 3.01.00 (Settings - System - System updates). Restart your DAP. Perform Factory reset (Settings - System - Reset options - Erase all data (factory reset).

1. Choose language. Tap "Start".
2. Read the EULA. Tap "Agree".
3. Read the Screen Lock security note. Tick "I agree". Tap "Next".
4. Don't connect to Wi-Fi now. Tap "Set up offline".
5. Tap "Continue".
6. Set up your Time Zone, current date and time. Tap "Next".
7. Disable all three options on this screen:
* Use location: "Off"
* Allow scanning: "Off" (no change)
* Send usage and diagnostic data: "Off"
Tap "Accept".
8. Set a PIN, tap "Next". If you don't want to use a PIN, tap "Skip". Tap "Skip anyway".
9. Set Auto Power Off timer. Choose your desired value. I choose 12 hours. Tap "Next".
10. Your DAP now starts to the default launcher. Choose your default Home screen. I choose Page 1. Tap "OK".

11. You are now on your Home screen. Swipe up to show installed apps. Launch the Settings app (⚙️).
12. Scroll down. Tap "About device".
13. Scroll down. Tap "Build number" repeatedly until a pop-up "You are now a developer!" shows up.
14. Tap "Back".
15. Tap "System".
16. Tap "Developer options".
17. Enable "USB debugging". Tap "OK".
18. Use a USB cable to connect the DAP to your PC.
19. DAP: Tap: Use USB for: "File Transfer". Tap "OK".
20. PC: Start Universal Android Debloater Next Generation on your PC.
21. DAP: Tap "Allow" to allow USB debugging connection with your PC.
22. PC: You are on "Recommended" list in UAD-NG.
23. Choose all packages except com.google.android.apps.nbu.files. This is the Files by Google app.
24. Click "Review selection (61)".
25. Click "Apply". UAD-NG uninstalls selected packages.
26. Switch from "Recommended" to "Advanced" list.
27. Choose all packages except com.google.android.inputmethod.latin. This is the Gboard - Google Keyboard app.
28. Click "Review selection (37)".
29. Click "Apply". UAD-NG uninstalls selected packages.
30. Switch from "Advanced" to "Expert" list.
31. Choose only packages com.google.android.cellbroadcastreceiver and com.google.android.cellbroadcastservice.
32. Click "Review selection (2)".
33. Click "Apply". UAD-NG uninstalls selected packages. There may be more packages that are safe to uninstall, I haven't tested that.
34. Switch from "Expert" to "Unlisted" list.
35. Choose only packages com.sony.songpal.mdr, com.sony.walkman.DeviceHelpSiteJpn, com.sony.walkman.launcherbookmarks, jp.co.labelgate.moratouch.
36. Click "Review selection (4)".
37. Click "Apply". UAD-NG uninstalls selected packages. There may be more packages that are safe to uninstall, I haven't tested that.
38. PC: Close the UAD-NG application on your PC. Disconnect the USB cable.
39. DAP: On your DAP, you should still have "Settings" app runing on screen. If not, return to Settings - System - Developer options.
40. Disable "USB debugging".
41. Disable "Use developer options".
42. Restart your DAP.

If you want use Google Play Store to install applications, you are now done. Restart your DAP.

If you want disable Google Play Store and Google Play Services, continue with next step.

You didn't uninstall Google Play Store (com.android.vending) and Google Play Services (com.android.gms) using UAD-NG. In my experience uninstalling these packages leads to boot-loop of the device, but we can disable it in Settings - Apps.

61. Return to Settings - Apps
Tap "See all 8 apps". (The number may (?) vary)

I'll need to find a youtube video on how to install the universal debloater. There's a lot of stuff on Android I'm not familiar with. Hope I can find a video

Hmm, can't answer on this, android 13 has its own issues too, sometimes the music stops after 1 song, the play button will not resume it. I need to swipe on screen to resume it, not often though.
My bad, think I discovered why Sony Music app stop working sometimes, my itchy hand enabled the "don't keep activities" inside the developer option. lol

Does anyone use this with Bowers and WIlkens P7 S2e, usb c to usb c?
It stutters like crazy for some reason.
usb c to the M2 iPad works like a dream so I am not sure what is happening.
It's a known issue with other headphones too. Official statement from Sony, the A300 was not developer for that use case.

The B&W P7 have a built in DAC/Amp, you're using the A300 to drive that DAC/Amp+Charge the headphones.

You're better of using your smartphone for that headphone
