Sony NW-A306 is a clean sounding DAP when it's on its "Direct Source: On" setting.
I'm writing this basic guide for those who have no experience on Sony DAP and going to have audition on this DAP before making purchase decision.
It's not a fair competition versus other DAPs if you couldn't unleash the potential of Sony A306.
Navigation:
1. Go to "Settings"
2. Tap on "About device"
3. Keep on tapping on "Build number" until the Developer options enabled
1. Go to "Settings"
2. Tap on "System"
3. Tap on "Developer options"
1. Scroll down and find the "Window animation scale", "Transition animation scale", and "Animator duration scale"
2. Set those 3 options to "Animation off"
3. These actions will reduce the lagginess of the graphical user interface transition
Sound adjustment:
1. Turn the "DIRECT" switch to the right (ON) if you would like to listen to the DAP without any audio processing
2. Turn the "DIRECT" switch to the left (OFF) and turn the "Equalizer" switch to the right (ON) and start to adjust the equalizer for a more fun sound
3. I recommend to start with adjusting the low frequency of the presets:
"Custom 1" : [31Hz +2.0] [62Hz +2.0]
"Custom 2" : [31Hz +2.5] [62Hz +5.0]
4. Apply the presets and make comparison
5. Make further adjustments if needed
My Sony MH1C EQ setting
[62Hz +2.0]
DSEE Ultimate: ON
DC Phase Linearizer: ON
Dynamic Normalizer: OFF
Vinyl Processor: OFF
My Sony MH755 EQ setting
[62Hz +2.0]
[4KHz -2.5]
DSEE Ultimate: ON
DC Phase Linearizer: ON
Dynamic Normalizer: OFF
Vinyl Processor: OFF
My NiceHCK YDX (with sponge) EQ setting
[250Hz -1.0]
[500Hz -1.0]
[8KHz +2.0]
[16KHz +2.0]
DSEE Ultimate: ON
DC Phase Linearizer: ON
Dynamic Normalizer: OFF
Vinyl Processor: OFF
1. Turn the "DSEE Ultimate" switch to the right (ON) if you would like to have better treble extension
2. This option only makes good recording sounds better and more airy, it doesn't really make bad recording sounds better, regardless it's loseless or lossy track
3. I recommend to turn this "DSEE Ultimate" ON for better treble extension, and turn this "DSEE Ultimate" OFF if you would like to have a longer battery life for music listening
1. Turn the "DC Phase Linearizer" switch to the right (ON) if you would like the bass sounds like on the traditional class AB amplifier
2. I recommend to turn this "DC Phase Linearizer" OFF for better bass timing
1. I recommend to turn this "Dynamic Normalizer" OFF to avoid volume and dynamic range compression
1. Turn the "Vinyl Processor" switch to the right (ON) if you would like a more analogue sounding
2. I recommend to turn this "Vinyl Processor" OFF because it sounds with a little bit early treble roll-off
3. You might want to turn this "Vinyl Processor" ON when you listen to oldies, and you might want to combo "Vinyl Processor" ON with "DSEE Ultimate" OFF and "DC Phase Linearizer" ON
1. I recommend to turn this "ClearAudio+" OFF all the time. With ClearAudio+ ON it sounds like Sony's proprietary Virtual Surround Technology (VPT) + Clear Bass effects were applied
2. ClearAudio+ isn't useless at all, you could try this effect by listening to Taylor Swift - Blank Space.
3. Turn on ClearAudio+ for movie watching gives you another kind of experience.
