Any idea of how good or bad is this player, IMO if it is good, is a dream come true....but it is too good to be true....(and I do not want a nitghtmare later)

I have one of these, modified to be multi-region compatible and it's a very nice DVD player. Sound isn't bad either, but mine primarily does transport duty, so i've never really listened to it critically. I've also never tried to watch any PAL DVDs with it either, but it's good to know that the capability is there if i ever need it.

There are a number of places that sell these modified units, so you may be able to get a better deal at another website.

Modded, the machine you're looking at is a solid multiregion player that does PAL to NTSC conversion and is purported to eliminate overscan through the zoom out feature. It isn't the only choice for that scenario.

My Malata N996 recently died and, as current Malatas don't do X-Y scaling, I was considering picking up either the JVC XV-NA77SL (which is going to be more stable than a Malata or Momitsu but is *not*, contrary to your linked web site, the silver version of the JVC XV-N510B -- it's an upgraded model) or, more likely, the Momitsu V880N, which has VGA output capability, can disable copy protection, upconvert DVD to HD and operate via ethernet. The V880-DX can also connect to a *wireless* network and, therefore, your desktop in the next room; you can listen to iTunes in your DVD room through the Momitsu. Unfortunately, it doesn't support DVD-A.

However, the Pioneer DV-578A-S plays SACD *and* DVD-A and, in modded form, does multiregion switching and PAL conversion.

Certain players mentioned here can also zoom out (unlike the Philips 963SA), which means no overscan on a non-anamorphic TV. To see them all, have a look at this page:

http://www.hkflix.com/hardware/

And don't forget to ask related questions in the DVD Player Forum on AVS, where people actually own a few of the machines I've mentioned:

Unfortunately, I just discovered Malata Canada is willing to fix my N996 a year out of warranty for $50.00 including shipping. I can't really justify the price of a new machine, since the N996 is far more versatile than anything Malata makes currently and I won't benefit from HD until I get a new set (which I don't plan to do for a few years hence).

[Edit: I haven't yet been able to verify that the JVC XV-N510B or XV-NA77SL have the zoom out feature, which is mandatory for anyone whose television doesn't do anamorphic conversion. If you don't have it, you'll miss a great deal of on-screen information whenever you play a letterboxed DVD (and even with certain fullscreen DVDs).]

I never had any DVD player with zoom, all my Sony DVD players never had this feature. IMO what for? I had never need it, I mainly hear and watch concert DVDs, and I don't care if it zooms or not, honestly, but if the feature is originally in the DVD player I would like ot have it after the mod, otherwise I would get a model without it instead...this is one of my major concerns while modding an equipment, sometimes the person who modded it, cancel, or eliminate centain features in order to make the player sound better, if this is the case, I don't care about mods, and will get another player instead...period, I want what is originally intended to be in the player.

Zoom out is important if you're serious about the multiregion aspect (since PAL to NTSC causes resizing issues) and if you don't have a television that does the anamorphic trick. You won't know why you need it until you have it and see the information you've missed. Having seen what's lost, I won't do without zoom out.
