Hi Everyone,

Just an introduction thread from a new(b) guy.

My name is Roy, in my early 40's, out of Los Angeles area.  I typically listen to MP3's (160 Kbps) and Podcasts on my Android phone at work.  Although I know that the quality/bitrate of these formats are not the best, I still want to hear the best sound possible - and being in my 40's, I know that I'm losing some sensitivity to high/low frequencies lol.  I've typically used the crappy earbuds provided with the phone or purchased online.  Last year I got a pair of Nocs NS200s for Android - one of the very few 3 button earphones that work with Android (Even the Klipsh Android specific earphones are only 1 button). I also have a pair of off the shelf Shure earphones that I got years ago (6/7 years?) from Best Buy for around $100 at the time.  I continued to use these up to my first purchase of high quality IEMs a few weeks ago.  The Shures were especially good on airplanes because of their sound isolating properties.  For working out, I have a pair of JayBird Freedom sweatproof Bluetooth earphones - not the most comfortable pair of earphones either lol

I was introduced to this site while Googling for recommendations on the best pair of earphones. I ended up spending a lot of time reading about the Shure SE530/535 Ltd Edn, UE 900s, Westone W40s and the Westone 4Rs.  As you may have noticed from my avatar, I ended up purchasing the W4Rs from earphonesolutions.com, partly because of the overwhelmingly positive reviews here on head-fi and also because of the 2 prong connection.

Now, if I could only find the Westone Epic MICS cable for the W4R... Although I did post in this thread for more info: http://www.head-fi.org/t/696418/a-lear-custom-made-cable-which-work-with-dj

I think you've made a great choice there. I absolutely love the isolation comfort and sound quality of my W4Rs, even on lower resolution tracks such as what you've got. Do yourself a favour though and see whether you can tell a difference when you rip your cd into a lossless format compared to your 160 kps. Take time to really listen to the 2 side by side and decide for yourself whether it's worth the extra space the music will take up on your phone.
Do you have a Samsung Galaxy? The latest firmware update on it has seen a tube amp feature on the equaliser settings; I like the sound that produces.
Junior member at 40? That's rich in't it! I had the same last year and I'm quite a bit more ancient! Greetings to you anyway. I wonder whether you will plunge into your wallet and buy a suitcase full of IEMs like most of us raving loonies have......

Thanks! I'll grab some lossless FLAC files ad re-encode them at 160Kbps and give the comparison a shot!

I do have the SG Note 2 running rooted with Android 4.3 and disabled KNOX. I installed the latest VIPER4Android app because it appears to offer lower level sound control than some of the other EQ apps out there. It also has a 10 band EQ as opposed to most apps with only 5. This should hopefully give me enough control to fine tune any imbalances...

I'm in my early 40's - almost mids lol.

I'm already looking in to custom cabling... From that would maybe be a portable amp/dac... then CIEM or reshells, etc... I'm sure I'll end up going into the deep end eventually lol.

Question, have people had any bad experiences dealing with the overseas companies for custom cables, re-shells and CIEMs? Seems kind of risky dealing with overseas companies in Hong Kong and such...
