I'm on build #2 on my room, with #3 in the planning stages.  Unfortunately, the family CFO won't approve the next build for another year or two.

Onkyo TX-NR609 (great starter receiver, but definitely the weak point for audio in the room now; amp starts to distort slightly in the last 10 dB before you hit reference)
Definitive Tech ProCinema 1000/2000 monitors in a 5.x setup
Definitive Tech Super Cube II x2 subwoofers
Oppo BDP-95 Blu-ray player
Samsung LED TV for display

Room treatments are ATS Acoustics 2'x4' panels (x8) and 4 upper-corner traps for bass arrest.

Next step is a big one and has to be all at once.  Planning to move to in-wall speakers behind an acoustically transparent projection screen with projector and hopefully DTS:X will be stabilized by then and I can upgrade to that at the same time.

Thanks for asking!

Hi everyone I just found this website today, and love listening to music during my work day. Im a graphic designer & photographer so on a computer all day long with headphones, I've had a pair of V-Modas for almost a year now and happy so far. But this website is great so much information here!

Quite right, Louie - I don't want any more problems in that department. The FiiO RC-HD1 is a lovely gold terminated PCCOC-A replacement which obviates the need for any cumbersome 3.5mm adaptor. But as a fellow spec-addict you no doubt already know this. On the music side, Dazed and confused is a great song which I also relate to.

No, I didn't know that.  But I want to thank you for the incentive to look it up immediately and study the heck out of it!

Please don't feel badly about my relapse.  First, it's not your fault.  Second, I did listen to some new Indie music while I conducted my research.

Why am I not surprised that someone who can relate to that song is a fellow specoholic?  Is it because we crave the certainty promised by numbers... while what's really important leaves us so perplexed?

Hi head fi'ers,

My name is Nick and I'm just getting into high end audio. I currently have Beyerdynamic DT 770s (80 ohm version) paired with an Audioengine D1 which I've had for the last year or so. I'm an active user over at overclock.net but decided to branch out to a more audio specific forum to get a wider range of advice on my next purchases. I hope to meet some interesting people and start participating more frequently once I become more well informed about audio products!

Hello everyone, my name is James and I am just getting into the world of high-end sound and headphones. I recently purchased the AKG K553 Pro's and an SMSL SD793-II. My wife's co-worker pointed me here so figured I should join up and participate in the community! Look forward to getting to know everyone.

Hello headfi'ers,
I'm Dileep and saw this forum when I was researching online about IEMs and thought this a good place to sign in for posting and asking help.

I've a decent set up:
Bowers and Wilkins M-1s -5 nos
Bowers and Wilkins 686 bookshelves - 2 nos
Definitive SC 4000 sub - 1 no
Powered by Denon 2313 receiver.

Works really well...!

I'm looking out for new pair of IEMs and already posted for suggestions in the help and recommendations section.

Thanks

Hi everybody.
I'm kind of new to this world.
As many others, I lurked a lot trying to understand how spend my money. :)
I ended up with an HD 650 and a O2+ODAC.
Now it's time to use them. I'll be around asking some advice about music.

Cheers

Hello, my name is Josh. I am a student at Georgia Tech, and I have recently gotten into audio quite a bit. My first pair of respectable cans were the Phillips Fidelio L1s. I am currently on a near new pair of Sennheiser HD 598s with the Objective DAC/ O2 Amp combo from JDS Labs and I am in love. I just ordered the Grado SR 325e to go along with my fledgling setup (it seems I am confined to aftermarket due to my income, but am not the least bit concerned about this fact). I really enjoy Symphonic Power Metal (Nightwish, Sonata Arctica) I really like intricate instrumental stuff like Scale the Summit as well. I listen to some ambience like Carbon Based Life Forms. I selectively like EDM at times. I am also getting into classical, I am really digging Tchaikovsky (one of the few classical composers other than the obvious ones that I know by name). I also like folk metal too ... and pretty much anything that is stimulating to listen to in some way or other. My recent experiences with nicer equipment has really let me expand my horizons, and though I have very faint technical knowledge, I really appreciate the music still. I joined this community to learn, participate,  and to hopefully get to the level that I have achieved in my more established hobbies. I am also an avid Linux geek, and if anyone has recommendations regarding audio setups on Linux systems (I've used Arch for about 3 years now, hell I got a job because of my experience there) that would be great. Sorry for the lengthy post, but I wanted to put it all out there for everyone. :)

Louie, ostensibly numerical specifications provide certainty - but comfort? - not necessarily. For example I have recently discovered that the HD 650 has a nominal impedance of 300 ohms. This leaves me with a lingering sense of doubt about whether a basic usb amp will drive them adequately. I think what we are really seeking is perfection.  That is an elusive goal in life. It is a matter of finding a scenario that you are happy with. It would seem that the differences within the HD518/558/598 family are mainly in aesthetics and casing (drivers and cables are apparently identical).
So I may well feel good about having the HD518, knowing that the world of exotica will still be here tomorrow.

how do you like your combo my friend?

Pretty well, thanks.
I also tried the Audioengine D1 for almost a month and I've spent hours comparing the same songs on both devices, trying to convice myself that they sounds the same.
But it's not. :D
I miss the spdiff input and the lack of power supply of the D1, but the O2 sounds warmer and definitely better.
