Seeing as how my Sony MZ-R700 started crapping out on me, it looks like I may be in the market for a new MD player...and I'm thinking, "Why not upgrade?"

So if we forget the fact that I'm broke and can't afford such a thing, I ask: What do all you experienced MD users recommend?

I really enjoyed the MZ-R700 for its sound quality, size, mic input, optical line in, and LP2/LP4/mono recording capabilities. I'd like to get something with all those functions AND a dedicated line out. Anything fit that description? The MZ-R900, maybe? I'll do a little searching, but I wanted to get your opinions too.

well, you're not going to get a dedicated line-out, unless you're willing to spend weeks trying to E-bay an old R50...so forget about that. new units do have a line-out function, it's just not the best in the world.

a R900 or R909 or R910 would all be great. the R909 is a real step up from the r900, it has a bigger screen, better button lay-out and a real jog-dial that goes round all the way (really handy). but if you can get a R900, that's a solid choice. the R910 has, compared to the R909 only a couple of extra hours on a battery.

I definately suggest looking for a Sharp DR7 though, they're just fantastic units, with great sound.

and really, surf to http://www.minidisct.com/forum/index.php. all the info is there

ProFingerSk8er, that's quite a looker. Just curious - does it allow LP2, LP4, and mono recording?

When you have to shift stuff, you do what it takes

Incidentally, did you know that the Sennheiser HD25-1 would be the ideal headphone to use with this player?

And... what an amazing coincidence! I have one for sale!!

for more detail of mz-r909, check out this page http://minidisc.org/part_Sony_MZ-R909.html

An alternative to the R50 if you really want a line out would be the R37. I haven't heard the 50, but the 37 sounds pretty damn fabulous out of the line out!

since when? though Sony gives you a menu option to set the line-out, and Sharp has you turning the volume to 30, Sharp's line out sounds better. seen alot of people agree with that. besides, Sharp's 'line-out' also pushes a lot more mV.

Line outs:

new Sharp vs. new Sony, Sharp wins, hands down.

old school Sharp vs. old school Sony, Sharp wins, Sony's only worthy competitor being the R50/R37 (the R37 is a striped down R50).

IMO, if you're thinking of the R909, you're better off with a DR7.
