I really like the new iPods, especially the nano. What do you guys think???

No new iPod classic this time, at least apple could put a better amp inside it.

Are you an apple fanboy?

Why do you need to go to that level? Just liking something does not make one a "fan-boy". Apple makes good products, and mediocre products. While it is true that Apple is a big marketing machine, imagine where the portable music world would be if not for the innovations Apple has made. While I own a number of apple products and enjoy them, they are not the best players I have, neither are they the worst.
You do not need to come down on anyone just because they like/dislike a certain product, just listen to their opinion, educate yourself, and make up your own mind.

Okay, maybe i was too rude calling the OP a fanboy.
However, what innovations has apple made in the portable music world? The only innovation i know about is making a portable player based on 1.8" hard drive... and, unfortunately, all manufacturers dropped such a players.
And new ipod nano is imho just unuseable. I even can't imagine how one should hold it in their hand.

The nano would be difficult to use I think. Touch controls on such a small device. lol. Going to use two hands to control? It doesn't make sense to me at the moment. And I seriously doubt that 24-hr battery life. :)

penartur, it's not so much who innovates but who makes the best implementation.  Apple does a great job of making no-hassle products.  They're not for everyone, of course.  But for those of us who have better things to do than futz with driver compatibility and cleaning out registries, the products are wonderful.  It used to take me a minute or two of digging through menus to access my phone list on the Motorola RAZR I used to use.  The iPhone is so intuitive that I don't even have to think about placing a call, I just do it.  Apple wasn't the first cellphone maker, but they got it right.  Also, I acknowledge that some of the Android phones are terrific - if I had to use one, I'd be happy.  But I'll stick with the iPhone because it works well for me.

I'm disappointed that all of the iPods were refreshed except for the Classic.  I was hoping for a bigger drive or maybe a touchscreen with a hard drive.

My feeling now is that Apple is going to keep the Classic around until the Touch has more more memory.  Maybe another year, and then the Classic will be gone.

The new Apple TV looks like a winner.  It has optical out and you can control it with an iPad or iPhone.  I'm going to pick one up as soon as they come out.  Should be perfect as a media center.  I'll be able to stream Netflix and it has optical out, which I'll feed to my DAC.  I'll also be able to scroll through my photos, so it covers everything I need and $99 is a great price.  I think Apple is going to sell a lot of these.

The Nano would be good with a strap, like a watch that you can plug phones into.

Erik, I was thinking the same thing. Originally I wanted a Mac Mini purely as a tidy front-end I could use to watch YouTube on my TV, but mainly to output lossless music from  DAS/Direct Attached Storage via the optical to a DAC/Amp/Speakers. £649 is a lot though!

Am I correct in thinking that with the new Apple TV, I can have the DAS connected to a Windows machine with iTunes, then use Airplay to send those 1's and 0's over to the Apple TV, which will output them bit-perfect via the optical out? It would be a LOT cheaper, plus I can still watch YouTube!

The new Nano is a big step back to me. Nixing video playback and tactile controls is a big minus in my book for a player of its caliber. I'd much rather buy one of the older generation Nanos if I were in the market for one of those.

The new Shuffle is...eh. It's certainly an improvement over the last one but I don't like the idea of getting an MP3 player without a screen.

The new Touch is hot. I'm pretty sure I'm going to sell my older 16GB Touch on eBay and get one of the 32GB models and I should be set for a good, long while.

Come on man. The iPod was one of the biggest innovations ever. Most other players before it had bad UIs and weren't as easy to navigate. It got everyone to get their crap together. If the iPod didn't come out the digital music era wouldn't have exploded until later. The iPod Touch was one of the first multi-touch PMPs, and still has a UI better then most. The nano was one of the smallest players when it came out, but still had all the basic features of the normal iPod.

The digital music era exploded already in 1999/2000 when mp3 players with enough memory to fit a whole album was released.

Too rude and not much of a history buff. Simple search will show it had the first lossless (not uncompressed) support for one. First pocketable DAP to with line-out support too. And if you want to be generous kinda created the entire market (if you consider the sales of the Creative Nomads and early Rio players* at the time of the iPods introduction). The 1G iPod was my third 'MP3 player' and probably eighth 'portable music player' and its affect on the personal music world was no more 'bound to happen' than the MP3 player years proceeding or the entire history of the MiniDisc. But something changed. You can argue about the cause, but not really the star.

This is a fun, slightly related article worth reading as a reminder of those early days and how a series of smart Apple decisions, a lot of bad Sony ones, and the difference in business perspective they came from, potentially made all the difference.

*Diamond/Rio - the original company - deserves a lot of credit for fighting the labels on even MP3 use. That legal battle and the iPods introduction are the two major points of DAP-dom to me. Everything else is minor in comparison. Well, maybe P2P sharing had a little impact.

I love the form factor of the new Nano, but like others, am miffed by the omission of video... taking away a key feature from the Nano line-up. I was also somewhat disappointed to not see a higher capacity iPod out. :frowning2: But, yes, loved the AppleTV enough to order right away!
