Been listening to my new HFI-780's for a few days now, and I'm absolutely in love. These cans rock my socks off. But, in true Head-fi fashion, I'm now wondering what I could buy to make them sound even better and I'm hoping I could get a few recommendations. I'm not looking to get too crazy though, perhaps spend around $200.
I currently use them on my PC which is powered by an X-fi Xtreme Music sound card. My PC is used heavily for gaming, as well as music and other media.
1) My first thought was to get them recabled at S2, which I figure would cost around $120. That doesn't sound too steep, but I'm a bit skeptical as to the return in sound quality it would give me.
2) Swapping out my sound card also seems logical. I'm very curious about the new HT Omega Claro Halo. It has a built-in amp and would be a nice integrated solution to give me more power. But with such a low impedance, would the 780's benefit much from more power? Would the Claro Halo pair well with it? And would the Claro Halo still be fully compatible with gaming?
3) Keeping the X-fi, but getting an external headphone amp. This I know the least about, as there are countless options and I also fear it gets the most expensive. I'm sure it's the quality way to go, but is it even worth it amplifying an X-fi signal? Is it possible to keep the cost realistic for me?
Any thoughts as to the next most beneficial step to take? Nothing too crazy though, just taking baby steps. Thanks.
