New here, looking for soundcard advice.

Phoenix, you may get better results just looking for two separate devices - one for your 5.1 output, another for your recording input. From the digging that I've done on a semi-similar subject, it seems that cards that do one well don't do the other, as people who do recording generally don't care about surround output and vice versa.

My suggestion is this: Grab the Chaintech card for your 5.1, and for your recording, pick up an M-Audio MobilePre. The MobilePre is an external FireWire box, but does recording quite well.

The M-Audio firewire solo acording to the guy a few posts up is good for what I want to be doing, though it is only for guitar, I also want to pick stuff of of cassetes and phonograph too. And as I know that all in one cards aren't as good as seperate devices, I'll have to consider this.

Well, I have to make a bit of a confession here - out of all the devices that have been mentioned on this thread, the only one I've used is the MobilePre. I used it to record a concert - I took the tape out from a Mackie 1604 through the MobilePre into a PowerBook running GarageBand. It acquitted itself quite well - SQ was pretty much exactly what I was hearing out of the headphone out on the 1604, and was rock solid through the concert. This experience is why I'm recommending the MobilePre to you as your recording solution. The best part is that the MobilePre comes in both USB and FireWire, so you can use it even if you don't have Firewire.
