Ok so as the title says i would like some help..I've searched around for answers and opinions but i am really split between the two options. As of now i have a Sennheiser HD 419 and using it with my onboard sound card (nothing note worthy) and i was thinking if i should get something like Audio Technicas m40x, or keeping my sennheisers and getting a dac+amp combo (was thinking about MSML M3) to improving my sound experience in overall. Just to clarify you about the usage of my headphones, I'm using them for listening to music solely and high formats aiff etc.

It would help if you listed a budget?

Usually better to buy the best headphones you can, DAC/amp is secondary.

A $25 Asus Xonar DG sound card should be better then your on-board audio.
But not knowing the make and model of the motherboard makes it a little hard to judge.

Yeah, i am starting to think it's wiser to go for headphones and possibly a cheap sound card for now.

Budget is approximately around 100, maybe as close as 150 even though i would prefer not to.

As for the motherboard it's a Gigabyte h170-hd3 the audio specifications is as listed:
Realtek ALC887 Codec
High definition audio
2/4/5.1/7.1-channel
Support S/PDIF Out

Soundmagic HP200 semi-open headphones.
Used ones for $95+ $15 shipping.

I'm guessing this is about the best value i can find for you.
Listing ends in five hours.

Between now and Black Friday will be about the lowest price new headphone will every get.
But I doubt new HP200 will get as low as the used pair i have listed.

Maybe later on you can invest in a sound card or DAC/amp, like around $70-$90.
