Undoubtedly, this will draw a crowd from loyal T-Mobile customers...But do you think this phone will also encourage more people to buy iPhones and unlock them?

And a ExtUSB based connector for headphones.

...why would it have that effect?

My friend is a beta tester for Google and I had a chance to play around with the phone a couple of weeks ago. The interface was not final yet and had a couple of pretty annoying bugs (one of the programs just froze the phone, another just kept it looping, etc.), but aside from those minor beta-related things I thought it was a pretty solid phone. I have small hands so it was more comfortable in my hands than my 3g iPhone (it's skinnier by about a quarter of an inch, but about an 1/8th of an inch thicker). The touchscreen was pretty responsive, but not quite iPhone responsive. The full size keyboard was a nice touch for those who will be doing a lot of text messaging or e-mailing, but I found my favorite feature was the little trackball on the bottom ala BB Pearl. It was nice to be able to use it both as a mouse and a scroll wheel for the screen. I think people would be pleasantly surprised by the phone, I know I didn't miss my iPhone much when I traded with her for a couple of days (the beta model she had was unlocked). Slight learning curve, but truly a great interface that you can clearly see was adapted from the iPhone.

I wouldn't go that far. Both the iPhone and Android were developed from touchscreen technologies that came before them. In fact, while I haven't played with Google's touchscreen yet, I'll come right out and point out that the iPhone's interface is downright primitive compared to some touch technologies currently on the market.

Let's not confuse android with HTC dream, fellows. From an audio point of view, I'm not keen on a prop HP out. I do like the idea of some tactile response (HTC dream) and I like the idea of a more open OS (android).

Isn't the iPhone 3G made of plastic as well?
Lol.

I for one prefer the G1 looks over the ugly looks of the iPhone, especially the plastic back, EW. But yeah, the G1 is like the first iPhone, needs more improvements and it has time to improve. The iPhone 3G was a huge disappointment in looks, functions (for the normal average Joe) and performance. That said, the day i buy the iPhone is the day it actually uses a proper camera as well as being easily unlocked.

Same as with the iPhone and the Touch, wait for G2, and see if most of the kinks are worked out.
