For the most part, linear FR and good CSDs have a strong correlation with good sound quality. I haven't measured ATs yet (I should have done so before I sold off my W1000X), but so far, only the vintage AKGs have been able to defy crappy measurements.

Not the greatest I've seen:

Yeah, I think the FR is less "n-shaped" than the w2002 and actually sound OK with rock unlike the w2002.  I found the same thing Wind, that at first there was little bass and hyper-treble-y, but then warmed up with burn-in to the point where the midrange was strong so that the treble felt less emphasized.  Out in the countryside now (should have left the phones burning in at home!  doh!) but hopefully the bass slam shows up over time because although the extension was there, still missing the slam for me (albeit directly out of a laptop only atm).

FTR, I really liked the W1000X when I heard them.

Uh... I think my W3000ANV just turned bass heavy. Like... seriously... it's way more prominent. I'm comparing with my W11R. My W11R has always been warmer sounding since this morning and now the W3000ANV almost sounds warmer. No EQ btw...

I'm going to chalk this up to listening fatigue. No more listening for me today.

To my ears the W3000ANV have a more forward, clear and detailed sound than the W1000x. The W1000x may have an ever slightly fuller sounding bass but the W3000ANV has better bass impact/slam. After listening to the W3000ANV for awhile, going back to the W1000x makes it sound noticeably veiled/recessed.

Overall I like the W3000ANV a lot but generally it sounds very similar to the T5p: beautifully clear mids and highs, sufficiently slamming, if not overly broad bass, and really recessed sub-bass.

I will do that when I get them... ;D I have my camera ready.

And kenshin27, how would you compare these to ATH-W1000X?

Just a couple of photos. Will try to take more later. I need to find a better place in my house to shoot the cans themselves cause the lacquered wood reflects like crazy. Also the wood is darker than it appears on the 3rd shot. I can barely see the grain on them right now.

Those are beautiful shots kenshin27! Way better than I could have done with my crappy iPhone.

You should keep them plugged in and burning though. =) I'm really digging them with metal right now.

Beautiful shots, kenshin. You do them justice.

Says the guy who a few posts back was all "no more listening tonight!"

They're certainly hard for me to ignore for too long.

I haven't heard the W11R and W10LTD yet, and my memory on the W2002 is a bit foggy, but I'd personally rank the woodies I've listened to as:

W2002 --> W10VTG --> W5000 --> W1000X --> W100 --> W11JPN --> W1000

Depending on my mood, I might rank the W100 above the W1000X. Allegedly Audio-Technica has two different versions of the drivers, and some W100s don't sound very good while others sound quite good. I must have lucked out and gotten the better version.

As for the W3000ANV, from what I've heard thus far, I'd say it may very well be at the top of the list as AT's overall best woody so far imo. Still a bit too early to tell though, and I need to spend more time with the W2002.

Obviously all this is my subjective take on the matter.

I'm not sure if you still have the W2002 or not.  If you do, why not search for the HA2002 to compliment them.  The HA2002+W2002 midrange is supremely transparent and nearly match the R10's vocal in my book.

I've never actually owned the W2002, just borrowed one a few months ago. I was pretty impressed even without the HA2002, but I'd definitely love to hear the two together some day, as I've been told they are indeed exceptional when paired. You make me want to listen to the W2002 again all the more.
