New Ear Wax Information? (Apparently it's good for us)

I'd love to have seen earwax just come out of my ear without anything.

It was stuck in there so well it took three doctor visits. It was a solid black plug the size of a dime, and I had less hearing in my left ear than with an Etymotic ER4p.

lol i remember the left time I "left ear wax along" for a year made me half deaf on BOTH ears

I ended up going to the hospital, and it took the doctor over half an hour to clean them up

What? First they say ear wax is bad and we need to clean our ears and now they say it's good? What about ear wax build up? I can't imagine how nasty my ears would be if I didn't clean them(plus earphone tips I put in them

) Plus all that wax could get impacted. That's medical news for ya-this week they say one thing, net week they'll say something else

Very interesting read! However, as an IEM user, is it wise for me to just leave it alone? The article did allude at one point to this being an exception as excessive use of earplug-like devices can actually discourage ear to dispell wax from itself. U reckon IEM users should use ear drops like recommended?

I love my ear wax! I keep just enough in there for taming my Grado's

That's not going to keep me from cleaning daily. Haven't had an ear infection in roughly 30 years and still can hear a 20kHz test tone. Sure, the ear is delicate, but this really isn't much different than learning to use contact lenses.

As a proud Sony N.U.D.E EX user (I own several different models including my war pair, my cling-wrap-modded MDR-EX90SL IEM's with double flange tips) and also a Hearos ear plug user (I use the Hearos Water Plugs [for their silmilar multi-flange design] as my main pair at work at Skookum Recycling Center, where it can get pretty loud during work), I say screw ear wax.

When I take my plugs or IEM's out of my ears I don't want to have to do too much maintenance to them, plus ear wax can be so vile sometimes and also a nusance to your hearing when it comes to haring everything from boomy bass and crystal clarity and the true SQ of your favorite player or even you own mate over the TV when watching a ball game or enjoying a good movie.

Excessive or impacted earwax affects 1 in 10 children and 1 in 20 adults. You shouldn't stick any object smaller than your elbow into your ear, including cotton swabs, doctors say. Credit: Dreamstime.com.

Can anyone here fit their elbow in their ear? If so I want pictures

Those doctors are obviously so naive when it comes to use of both ear plugs and IEM's that the folks in both the Porta-Fi and Head-Fi worlds that most of us on this board live in use.

Plus do these doctors ever clean out their ears and do regularly-scheduled maintenance on them like most of us do? I can buy the theory of not putting Q-Tips in our ears but try saying that same thing about Q-Jays. Tough sell IMHO.

Maybe I should get mine cleaned out quarterly so I can enjoy the full SQ of my arsenal of Porta-Fi gear without having to "crank it up" very much.
