New Dilemma: E4 vs Refurb HD600

I realized that with the head-fi discount I could get a pair of E4s for $209, which puts me in a spot having heard the rave reviews. So, should I go with the E4s or the HD600s (bear in mind, my main source is an unamped X5 and occasionally my computer)? Thanks in advance.

not really a decision here. e4s.. then get an amp. Then look into HD series. Joy to all...

Can't run the HD600 without an amp. you can but at a great loss. Get the e4s. Ho.. Ho.. Ho..

Thanks again for the advice, gentleman. Which amp do you recommend? I'd prefer something portable.

I have a pair of hd600s and e4c and I think my hd600 is a lot better. I like my e4c's too and most people would be satisfied them. My hd600 can drive from my M3L(X5 w/o lcd) and computer(m-audio) faily well unamped, but the e4 sounds a lot better than the unamped hd600. If you could get an amp reletively soon and you were using this setup at home I think you should go ahead an get the hd600. It's not hard to live with the the lower volume for a few weeks. If you are using this outside the house you have to go with e4cs amp or not. Sound leaking in and out is bad IMO. You don't want your boss to know you are listening to michael bolton song's on that X5

About the amp, I have the portaphile v2 and it sounds just fine to me. It's the only amp I have so I can't compare it with anything else. I wouldn't spend money for any amp if I only had the e4. I noticed no improvement when I amped my e4 with my $200 portaphile.

The SQ difference between an unamped HD600 and an E4 is a toss-up because the E4 doesn't really need an amp to sound near its best, while the HD600 MUST have one to perform well.

You can get them cheaper then that even, probably around 170, just do a froogle.com search.
