Hey Folks,

I currently have a Sony NW-A45 DAP and I’m pretty happy with it, didn’t break the bank and small enough to take the gym without bothering me... However when I’m at work or home the size doesn’t matter so much. I have been considering a few potential ideas to get a little more of my music. Headphones I use with it are Westone w30 or Audeze iSine LX, I do have some Beyerdynamic DT 1990 - but they are at home only.

I have been considering a higher quality DAPS - sub 1000 still. OR the idea of just getting an DAC/amp for my A45 (FiiO q5?)... I dont think need anything more powerful to push my IEM so maybe its a waste of money - im still learning how things work sonically. (BABY audiophile in training :D )

Simple question - Do you guys recommend a better DAP all around or would an external DAC/AMP kick it up to the next level? If I do go the new DAP - I would like to be able to stream TIDAL - this is my only issue with the A45 I wish it could stream TIDAL. Also, I wonder if getting a balanced cable for my Westone, or iSine would help - this would mean I need an audio source that can accept balanace connection (the A45 does not).

I have no idea if a better DAP would make my already FLAC / a couple DSD library sound better. I would hope so but im not 100% sure.. To me if my A45 already plays the files, why would a higher priced DAP play it better? Like I said, im still learning. I do have a pixel 3, which can stream TIDAL, but the no headphone jack is meh.

Thanks,
