Is this Zen Lite?

http://asia.creative.com/products/po...n_nx/specs.asp

Other than the fact that it offers the removable battery it is still Li-ion, not polymer. Creative boasts about the slimmer body but we are only talking about 2.5mm less in thickness. Give me break. No audio-out either.

Zen NX
Size WxHxD 76 x 113 x 22 mm
Weight 226g with battery
204g without battery

Zen Original
Size W x H x D (mm) 75.9 x 112.6 x 24.5 mm
Weight 9.5 oz (268g) with built-in Li-ion battery

I'd say it's a waste..

Austonia is usually ahead of the curve on new HD players, and I would love to hear from him about this one. I just bought a Zen and am happy with it, but would have loved the replacable battery and less weight. By the way, the Zen is not ugly bud! IPOD is for conformists (now that should start a good food fight).

The newest firmware for the Original Zen (1.11.01) now has a sleep timer. The only thing missing is the wake-up to music feature, which I'm sure they will add in a future update.

Also, don't forget that the Zen NX can't use the FM wired remote. This capability and the onboard memory buffer had to be sacrificed in order to slim it down by 2.5 mm.

Other than than, it's basically "Original Zen Lite", though not really that lite since they didn't switch to a 1.8" hard drive and kept the existing 2.5" hard drive.

The removable/replacable battery sure is nice though.

i like the look of the NX better than the old zen. seems more streamlined. But 8mb only? come on creative, how much does that extra 8mb of sdram cost these days, $1? 8mb is like less than two songs buffered at higher bitrates.

The 16 mb on the the original Zen already looked a little weak when compared with the Ipod's 32 mb, but 8 mb on the Zen NX is downright atrocious. I have some longer songs (192 VBR) that are bigger than 8 mb! The hard drive will be spinning a lot more on the Zen NX, which will eat into the battery life.

Memory is cheap. Not sure why they are skimping on this? Creative Labs must think this is the 1980s again when memory was at a premium.

I'm sure they choose a white case on the Zen NX for a reason...trying to put visions of Ipod dancing in consumer's heads? Hey, they could have went to the other extrme (like the Philips HD100) and made it all black...The anti-Ipod.

I just can't wait until there's an mp3 player with mp3 recording up to 320 KBPS, 128 meg buffer, color LCD, 60 gig HDD, and a good headphone out that can drive Senn's.

That'll be the day though... (not to mention it'd cost ~$1,000)

So far only iRiver iHP-100 seems to demonstrate the potential of being ultimate MP3 player but still not quite due to its critical drawbacks, only 10GB and low soundput - L£©20mW £«£¨R£©20mW : (16 ¥Ø).

IMO, Zen NX would have had it if...

1. 1.8" HD was used to bring down the size
2. Removable Li-on Polymer Battery for longevity
3. At least 32MB Buffer (like iHP-100)
4. Line-out
5. USB/Firewire combo
6. Bigger LCD
7. Retain 50mW+50mW =100mW output.
8. Bigger HD density (40GB~60GB)
9. Better/Slimmer leather Case.

Q : what does buffer size matter (8mb) if it still gets 14 hours runtime..? iPod's 32mb is all nice and dandy except you can't even listen to it for 1 shift at work (~ 7 hours). so, I think the buffer size matters less than overall runtime.

OK, removeable battery, no ****. they should have thought have inlcuded that feature in the first place (like NJB3). i mean, how hard is it to implement a removeable battery? even the e.digital Treo has a removeable lithium battery.

Zen NX does look more sophisticated. cool.

Still, the same micro-size screen. Too small in my opinion. Zen was causing my eyes to bug out trying to read that thing.

Still, no line-out.

Overall... Better, but still too many compromises.

no audio out? doesnt that defy the point of having an mp3 player? or is this just for transfering data between various computers..... lol
