Many of us wrote about the not so neutral sound of the R10, and I too thought that this headphone would be considered a little coloured. But with my last experience I’m doing with the New Angstrom amplifier, I have totally changed my impression: the R10 is now so natural and neutral that I cannot imagine better. The same I can to tell about the bass region of the cans: incredible! I confirm my idea about the R10 that is the most sensitive cans in the world and I consider them like a musical instrument. His performance depends a lot by what you put together: source, cables and specially the amplifier. As I said my equipment now is unimaginable for purity and reality of sound presentation. At this moment I have just one only cans but I thing would be interesting to test another cans with these partners...

Best!

Nik,
I've been thinking about it recently and I recalled that the R10s were originally designed to be run off the speaker outs of an actual multi-watt amp. Sony used to sell an adaptor for the R10 for this purpose.

I think that despite impedence rating of 40 ohms is deceptive, the R10s really require extra power to sound their best, especially to bring out their bass characteristics which really are actually excellent, I agree.

I also don't know what people mean when they say the R10s are "colored". Sure, all audio components have coloration, but to these ears, the R10s are the *least* colored, most natural and real-sounding phone I've owned. Cheers.

I still don't understand why some will complain about colourations. There is nothing necessarily wrong with coloured components, if they still reproduce the most realistic, and natural sound. I just want Sarah McLachlan to be singing in my bedroom at the press of a button, not to be listening to the most uncoloured reproduction of her CD.

That's funny right?
Well IMO "colouration" means in this case, that the sound listened is not similar to the reality, and that difference is the "colour" , (opposed to neutral, that means that is more close to it) and not that it is different or not of what is recorded on the CD (or any other media), of course, it should be neutral, but is it always? Who knows for sure how was a sound recorded on the CD (or any other media), and how is it supposed to sound, is there in the planet any refference setup? All mics recording consoles, etc... includes colouration in more or less quantity in the recordings, IMO the only accurate refference is the real sound, on the real life....and even sometimes in a concert in a real life, the audio setup includes equalizers, amps and a lot of devices that alter the natural sound or tone of the instruments, and that sound is the one we perceive as the "real sound", so not even this one is sometimes accurate, IMO unless you are listening just an acoustic instrument in front of it, like a piano, or a guitar, etc...and without any amplification...there is no way for sure of measure the colouration, this should be the ideal reference, but how many times you find a recording, of a single instrument alone...

I think I hear a pair of Grado HP-1000's calling Nik's name.

The R10's are extremely coloured when compared to the HP-1000's. I don't understand how an amp could change the actual signature of a headphone....but if so congrats Nik!

What is coloured for one hearing, for another maybe is not, this is a matter of perception, and is very subjective BTW, and also depends of the listening education we have, for sure is not the same for us, that for those guys out there with big subs in a trunk of a car, (of course these are the two ends, but even between us, you may find some members who like more bass, or a more bright the sound, etc...according ot the way they grow up listening)
BTW some heafiers consider the R-10 coloured, when others consider it extremelly neutral, and maybe you can find some who consider the HP1000 coloured......R-10, HP1000.......one thing is sure, I would like to give them a try anyway...

BTW how is the bass extension on the Omegas? I have heard in some place that electrostatics have some kind of bass roll off....Is that true?

Do you have any idea of how was this adaptor, or what was inside, a tranny, a pair of resistors, etc....
