Hi folks,

My Marantz CDP just died - the player kept spinning the discs and is unable to read them. So, I'm in the market for a new CDP.

I'm looking to dish out about $600 for a new CDP. Would greatly appreciate suggestions.

I would prefer to buy new. As I live in Thailand, some smaller brands might not be available, and so I probably will have to stick to the more common brands.

I'm eyeing the NAD 542. But would prefer more information on potential alternatives before making a decision.

Thanks a bunch in advance for any advice you could give.

Do you have any intention of reviving your dead Marantz? It could be that the lens is dirty or need replacement. Either case you don't need $600. However if you are just looking for an excuse to dump it it is quite understandable.

How do you like the Marantz sound? Marantz has a bright and lively sound. The NAD seems to have a warm and laid back reputation, but I haven't heard the model you mentioned.

You probably are aware of the major brands, I'm sure that others like Cambridge Audio, Denon have offerings in your budget. Whatever brand you choose, just audition them before you buy.

Looking for an excuse to dump an old equipment?!

Why would any head-fier in their right mind ever want to ditch an old rack for some shinier and more expensive...

Given that the new CDP is going to be the source for my headphones and speakers setup, I would prefer something with a more lively sound to go with my Cyrus amp and B&W speakers. IMO, the speakers and amp are already tad laid back sounding to my ears, so a brighter sound from the CDP might be a good mix.

Marantz are the livelier ones, may be others can chime in on other brands. When I auditioned the Denon DCD-1500AE side by side with the Marantz SA7001 (which I got), I find the laid back and warm sound simply less attractive to me.
