Okay, so I am new here (posting wise) but have been lurking for quite a while.

I just got a new pair of Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro's to replace my broken pair of old-school Sony MDR-V5's. The Beyers sounded absolutely beautiful when plugged into my reciever, even without a seperate headphone amp, and I was in a sonic utopia

.

Now, even though i bought these off ebay, they were new, and the box was still sealed.

Fast forward 5 days. I am enjoying my new cans, when suddenly the right driver starts to have some minor 'static' background noise. Not 5 minutes later, the right driver stops working completely, leaving me with a pair of DT385's (half of 770, get it

). Anyway, this totally sucks. It is not the reciever, as my old (but physically broken, electrically fine) MDR-V5's still work fine, as do another pair of cheap-o's. It is possible that it could be the 1/8th -> 1/4th adapter that is included, and I have not tried the beyers on a portable yet, but I'm pretty confident they're dead.

So, a couple questions.

1. What are the odds that Beyerdynamic USA will help me out (since these cans are so hard to find in the USA)?

2. Has anyone here had a similar experience with Beyer cans?

3. Was there anything I could have done to make this happen? (I doubt I was over-driving these cans, as i do not have a seperate headphone amp, and through their short life there was no discernable distortion that i could hear, aside from what was described above..)

Thanks for any help, I'd like to re-join Team Beyerdynamic DT770 as soon as possible

EDIT: P.S. - Does anyone here fix old-school cans *cough* MDR-V5's *cough*

this is a case of infant mortality. it happened to my DT931. as I did not buy the headphones from the authorized distributor (BD will probably want to see the sales slip), but rather from another headphier, I had to pay for a replacement driver. no big deal, just $50. it happens.

contact your local BD distributor or warranty centre and see what they say.

Anyone have any idea who distributes Beyers in the USA?

What about USA warranty service, has anyone had to deal with this?

sounds like a case of

a. a broken/stretched cord

b. a bad solder joint in the driver

both of which can be solved easily and cheaply by you, if you dare open up your cans.

you should a) try whitout the adapter b) test does cord positionin ect. make the driver work again c) look do you have lot of hair inside the driver; before calling to beyer

okay, I tried without the adapter (still didnt work).
I also tried different cord positions, which also did not work.

I also emailed beyerdynamic usa through their web-based email form, with no response.

this sucks. I am calling them tomorrow hopefully.

since the cord has never been stretched, i doubt it's (A). it sounds more like (B) than anything else. Does anyone care to help me (guide me through) taking apart my beyers?

Well, kudos to beyerdynamic USA. You guys rock!

Apparently the warranty policy is this: 2 year warranty with proof of purchase.

Simply send your beyers to the beyerdynamic USA site (farmingdale NY) ATTN: Repairs, with proof of purchase enclosed, and a description of the problem, and they will repair at no charge.

Outside of 2 years, I've heard that they will still repair your cans, but you may be charged for new drivers (another thread mentions something about $50 for a replacement on both drivers, I would call them and ask though, just to be sure).

anyway, sent my cans in, got em back about a month later with the right driver replaced/repaired. I think it was replaced though, because the left driver sounds burned in (more mellow) and the right one doesn't.

all around good experience! Thanks Beyerdynamic USA!

let's hope they took the time to match drivers for you.

Glad to hear about the good experience. I am hoping my DT770 Pro's don't have any problems, but if they do your experience is definately encouraging as far as getting them fixed. Welcome back to Team Beyer DT770
