New Audio Technica Woodies: ATH-W1000Z announced
Feb 2, 2015 at 1:21 PM Post #136 of 259
I heard the ATH-W1000Z's at a BIC camera store in Tokyo while I was on vacation there early in January and thought they were pleasant enough.  It sounded similar to a cross between the W5000 and W1000X with flatter tone without the sometimes harsh bass of the W1000X, but not as good in the upper frequencies as the W5000 as it tails off a bit.  It was powered by some kind of amp that I couldn't figure out what it was and there was an option to plug your phone in as a source so I listened to some of my favorite rock and jazz tracks briefly.  The wood grain on the W1000Z is as beautiful as always though!

From what I have read, it's like a mini W3000ANV?

Yesterday I went to a local headphone shop to try W3000. Forgot to check ANV or not, most probably the ANV version. Using the similar ifi stacks, yes, W1000Z sounds pretty close to the W3000.

There is no non ANV version of the W3000

. Then there is the elusive L3000, in brown, or even rarer, in green leather.

Mmmh, then that's interesting. How much to the W1000Z's retail for already ?

Since reviewing recently the HA5050H, you might have had the HA5000 headphone amps in mind, which come in two versions, the original HA5000 that was released alongside the W5000, and the HA5000ANV that was released alongside the W3000ANV

I would love to try HA5000, but so far I haven't tried it. I have around 3 items to be reviewed right now. Once done, I will check with Audio-Technica Singapore if I can loan the AT-HA5000 or the ANV version. Since HA5000 is full solid state, probably sound signature will be different than the HA5050H that has tube stage. Well, let see if I have the chance to put my hand on it

I had a chance to listen to the HA5000 in the Paris AT Concept Store, fed by my DX100, and was very impressed. I hope they will showcase the HA5050H there once released; your review got me very interested.

Beyerdynamic T1 is my reference headphone. Now I really miss AT-HA5050H, because my T1 sounds best with AT-HA5050H. And now... I couldn't hear the same performance from my T1 anymore... so sad

I'm interested in picking up the W3000ANV new if possible.  Seems like the used ones go for over 1000 USD anyways.

A new one ? 1500 to 2000 dollars if you are lucky. There is one in Tokyo available, or was a few weeks ago, but I did not check since. It is either a new one or a store demo unit. There are also some available in China, if you can spare 2500 to 7000 dollars. The used ones on this side of the Atlantic sell for 1200 to 1500 dollars. And the prices will climb as the time passes.

Currently I am talking to a guy to make a version of hybrid transportable amplifier with internal battery, tailored specifically for T1. If something that is worth and fit for T1 comes out of it then I'll let you know. It will cost you around 1200 USD, if you are interested.

Wow, that's a very interesting project indeed! Probably you might want to start a new thread for it

I was hoping to find one in east Asia for 1500 USD or so (perhaps extremely optimistic?).  If I couldn't than I have been keeping my eyes on the classified section.  Would be nice to have it with the W5000 and the W1000Z I plan on adding to my growing collection.
