Current setup:

Source: pioneer cld-s201 laserdisc

http://www.laserdiscarchive.co.uk/la...r_cld-s201.htm

Amp: govibe5, no mods or anything(using a standard music cable. red and white rca with headphone plug going into the govibe's input)

headphones: SR60, no mods and the same pads it came with-comfies.

What I Like:

overall detail is about 10x better then the MDRV600 going into an old technics receiver and about 3 or 4x better then the SR60 going into the same receiver, hearing the different pitches and tones more accurately, being able to more distinctly hear the separate backing vocals, the separation in general, I like how the sound surrounds me on top and on the sides, how it makes cds mastered in the 80s sound very vibrant and often better then their remastered counterparts.

The old versions sounded stuck in the speaker without amplification. Loud remasters really push the volume limits and clip occasionally. It's like this remastering was done so you can get a pumped up sound without amplification. I also like how film scores sound with this setup(or even with the receiver). Being onstage as people say about grados is another thing I really like. However, I haven't really tried other audiophile headphones aside from plugging some $200 Sennheisers into my discman at Tweeter Center. It really wasn't the best way to test them, I'm sure. I also have the KSC35s for my discman. I like them, but they don't have the detail that the grados do.

I picked Grado about 10 months ago because of the interview and the company's rep, along with what I read about how great the SR60s are for the price. I got the impression that they were the headphone that stacked up best against others that cost hundreds more. I've only really been using the govibe the last few days. When I first got it last year, I found the overall sound to be too bright and trebly. I went back to the receiver and sacrificed some detail.

I figured I'd give it another try because I thought it might help amp up some bad band rehearsal karaoke machine to cd recorder recordings. It enabled me to hear the rehearsals much more accurately then through the receiver. I'm not sure why I find the govibe more tolerable now. Maybe this laserdisc player is a better source then my old cd players. Two 5 disc changers that kept skipping. I'm hoping that putting memorex printed labels on the discs isn't adding weight and messing up source after source.

What I dislike: lack of bass, despite some albums sounding balanced, this setup also makes albums sound colder then normal. The cord too. It's always twisting(the part going from the right side into the middle thing is all spiraled out).

What I Want:

Even more Detail and separation, at least a 25% warmer sound, anything that will make things sound more real and accurate, and for the music to surround me even more then it does

Music Taste: Judas Priest, Dokken, Bowie, Manilow, Pink Floyd, Guns N Roses, orchestrated film scores, 80s mainstream, Nirvana, dance music, death metal, melodicrock.com stuff, Metallica, Journey, not much classical, jazz, or country. I mainly listen to stuff that's close to the bands I listed.

Budget: I'd consider asking for the GS1000, but it doesn't sound like the end all be all of headphones(and if I got that, I would want it be the end all be all). The RS1 sounds good, but so does the 325I and the HD650. That's just my general impression after reading many threads. Maybe I just need a new amp to get what I want. Is a new source worthwhile?

If I need really high-end headphones, but they also need a high-end amp, DAC, and source, I'm ok with that. I'm looking to keep the dollar amount as little as possible. However, If there's a general consensus that the RS1 does everything I'm looking for and just mops the floor with everything else within this context, then RS1 is what I'll ask for, hypothetically speaking. Same deal if a tube amp is gonna provide an experience more like I want.

I am just curious what an estimated minimum it would take to get the results I'm looking for. That way I can just stick with what I get. If I give it more thought then that, my wallet will have a big hole in it 7 months from now

If I had the cash I'd have quite a collection by now. I figure I can use some gifts up to get an improved system, and then maybe try some other phones and components later when I have the cash.
