Hi!

My mission is to improve my source as much as I can for around 200$.
I live in Israel, so I don't have a lot of options, and after a lot of reading here, I have narrowed down my possibilities to the two dac/amps in the title. The dac/amp will be used to power my current headphones - Alessandro MS-1s with bowls.
I mainly listen at home, where my music is stored in high-quality files on my computer, which have a very bad on-board sound. When I commute, I have a Zen Touch player and CX-300 to keep me company, but currently I don't intend to use any more equipment with them.

The thing that bothers me the most with my current sound card is the muddiness and total lack of clarity. The highs can get harsh easily, and the bass is very muddy and unrealistic. I can feel that the MS-1s can give me a lot more, If I just feed them with a better signal. Even with my Zen player the MS-1s sounds a lot better.
I'm not looking for an analytical sound, I want my music to be fun, with a tight bass, forward midrange and clean, sharp highs, so pretty much I want to enhance the standard MS-1s characteristics...
The two options I have listed are pretty different, with one being an amp with a dac, and the other more of a dac with an amp, but since I've never had a good amp nor dac, I can't decide which is more important, and that's were you can help me.
I want to know which of these two options will better suit my needs, seeing as I am a student, and don't have a lot of cash to experiment with my setup.
The Move is newer and a little pricier (and comes without psu and baterry, iirc), and the 0404 has a lot of other cool features, which I may or may not end up using (can be used with speakers, guitars, etc.), which makes the choice even harder.
The bottom line is that I want to choose the one that will make my phones "sing" the most, and won't make me want to upgrade for some time.

Sorry about the longish post, and hope you could help me, lately I spend too much time reading these forums, and not enough listening to music!

I'm in the same boat, but thinking of the option of getting a chaintech av710 soundcard + dac + corda mkIII.

The chaintech should be around $30, though i'm not sure how easily available it would be for you. Getting a dac... i'm not too sure how much

.

Is there a huge diff in stepping up from the corda move's 16 bit reolution dac vs a 24 bit dac?

Yobs - why buy a sound card AND a MKIII? If you can find one, you'd be better off with a USB DAC/amp combo e.g. MKIII-USB or Corda Move.

The DACs on these portable amps are excellent and completely bypass existing sound cards (you don't even need a sound card in your computer).

Oh and BTW there's more to DACs than the unit width (16-24bit). Remember audio CDs are 16-bit...

Get the Move. It is far more versatile due to the portability and the fact that the amp in the Move is way better. It's not like the DAC in the Move is bad. In fact I think it's very good.

senny thanks for that

.

My original reasoning was that hooking up a soundcard -> zhaolu or other dedicated amp -> corda mkIII would just be cleaner in general.

Looks like i'll be going for a move... Now to see the word on move impressions...

Check the 5 page "'Meier Corda Move details released" thread in the amp section. So far impressions have been very good

I e-mailed Jan about the Move and got a lightning fast reply, so that's already a good sign...

The thing is, I haven't read so far about experiences with using the Move together with a grados/alessandros, and some said that it is good with a more "laid-back" systems. That's why I'm a little bit worried that the Move won't suit my Ms-1s.
Is there anyone with the Move and grados/alessandros, or better yet the MS-1s, who can throw in some impressions?

I've just had an interesting time with the MS1. While the Move works well with the 650s, the Porta Corda MKIII-USB seems to be much better for the MS1. Sounds more synthetic on the Move...

IMO the MKIII-USB is excellent for MS1s... not convinced the Move is a good match. Seems too 'closed in', not enough clarity, less impact - strange!

Edit: most of this was fixed by changing the gain setting to 'low'...

senny-ftw, as a reference, how many hours have you logged on your Move by this point? Thanks in advance.

Hehe. Comparing really similar amps is not as easy as Skylab makes it appear.
