I'm using my PC with a SMSL SU-8 DAC and LSR 30X studio monitor speakers.
I preordered a THX AAA 789 amp which is coming to me in December, and I want to add that to my setup.
I need to know to what would be some examples of good products I could buy that would both:
a) allow me to make the audio to stop outputting to my speakers when I am listening via the 789 amp & headphones
b) give me independent volume control over my speakers.
c) and if possible, I'd like the whole audio chain to be completely balanced, both with the headphone amp and also with my speakers.
Last time I asked about this, I think I received two suggestions. One was to ditch all the stuff I have now and instead buy a single product that has all those features in one box. But I don't want to do that. I want a solution that will let me use the 789 amp specifically.
The other suggestion was to get an active preamp. But when I did a web search for those, I had no idea what I was looking at. A lot of the products that I found were huge, and looked strange to me, and seemed to have all sorts of things on them that I don't really want or need. They seem to have been designed for completely different use cases than what I need it for. But I don't know how to search for the correct type of preamp which suits my use case.
I don't really know what I'm doing, at all, in regards to buying audio equipment.
So my questions are:
1. If I do indeed have to get an active preamp to solve these problems, then could you please link me to a few examples of exactly what items would be of the type I'm looking for? And preferably ones that aren't super big and unwieldy.
2. Instead of an active preamp, would it be possible for me instead to solve this problem with a passive preamp (because I don't want an active preamp to be changing my audio signals in any way, which I presume it would do if I were to use an active preamp?).
3. If I buy a volume knob for my speakers, then would that mean I can solve all three of these problems without needing a preamp?
