I'm running sound for my school's theater, and we need software to play sound clips. I've heard of software that you can program certain sounds to certain letter on the keyboard, but, I don't know that is it called. Any of you guys know of one of these programs?

Thanks guys.

No, one that plays mp3's and wavs.

A MIDI controller doesn't play MIDIs... MIDI just refers to how the information is sent. It's a type of keyboard that sends messages to the computer, and you can program sounds to the individual notes of the keyboard.

Kontakt is one piece of software that will allow you to do this. I've never tried using a program to map sounds to a typing keyboard, but it seems like there should be software that will do this easily. I can think of one example (Renoise's instrument feature), but it wouldn't be easy to learn just for this purpose.

Audacity might do this...I know all the other major DAW programs will allow you to do that, although I've never actually tried to map anything to a computer keyboard.

Or you could buy a sampler. But then you would have to have a MIDI controller....unless it already had one built in (or you just played them directly from the sampler...but that's not terribly easy).
