Am so bored with what I currently have in rotation:

TOOL
Cave In
Katatonia
Novembre
Mastodon
DEP
Nuerosis
ISIS

I know-not all the same genre-but figured id lump all the semi-aggressive material in one grouping.
Have always leaned more towards the artsy/avante-garde prog metal but I like an aggressive and dark yet melodic edge (although nothing too experimental). definitely dont like the goth related stuff.
Recs??

I've been really enjoying Priestbird's "In Your Time" lately. Not really metal, but might fit the bill.

For straight ahead fun, The Sword "Age of Winters" is a headbanger.

I've heard good things about "Winters" who has a new album out...

Interested in other recommendations. Been on a Metal kick again lately myself.

Opeth - Ghost, Damnation, Deliverance (earlier ablums are great but more extreme)
Porcupine Tree - In Absentia, Deadwing
Devin Townsend - Synchestra, Terria, Ocean machine
Edge of Sanity (Dan Swano) - Crimson, Purgatory Afterglow, Spectral Sorrows
Enslaved - Ruun, Isa, Below the Lights
Agalloch - all
Anathema - Eternity, Judgement, Alternative 4

x3 on Opeth, I think they fit your description fairly well. Check out their album 'Blackwater Park' for catchy melodies and musical perfection.

Also, DarkAngel mentioning Edge of Sanity got me thinking of Dan Swanö's soloproject, simply called Dan Swanö. He only made one album, called 'Moontower'. Definately check it out, his voice is awesome.

I would highly recommend Meshuggah's "I" EP. It is a single 20 minute long track, a blast of math metal mastery, dense and fantastic. If that doesn't wake you up out of your slump, nothing will.

Big PT fan already-shouldve mentioned that in the original post.
Like Opeth-but a little too goth/black for me (if that makes sense)-very depressing sound-although still quite good.
I like Meshuggah, but only in doses. I cant just throw it on.

many have mentioned Agalloch and Anathema.
I believe one of them has that "doom metal" type sound? Not into it.
Can you describe these two a bit more?
Any others?

i have a feeling you dislike anything with guttural death growls or black metal rasp. so more instrumental stuff: ever heard Russian Circles - Enter? it's extremely accessible.

and i really think you should give Opeth another try. i got over the death vox. i have a suggestion: listen to the album Still Life at night. it just works. i don't think their music is depressing at all normally (much less than Katatonia at least), just a bit scary at first.

edit: well looks like a read your post wrong. i will keep that message about Opeth because... i don't know.
