So what all has changed with the grado lineup since they have an i now for improved?
Upgraded dynamic transducers and the new 8 conductor cable design
What makes you say that you settled for the 325is ?
I don't believe all of the models have the 8 conductor cable, and not all of cables are ULHPC and all the voice coils are not either. starting from the 325is and up, both the connector cord and the voice coils are UHPLC oxygen free, with the exception of the RS2i which has a UHPLC voice coil, but only a HPLC connecting cord, also the frequency responses differ. If you check out Grado labs website you can see all of the specifications on all of their models.
That was a joke. Sorry.
Maybe the SR225 is a better deal at $100 less, but I find the SR325 to be quite impressive. Enough so that I've started to wonder if I should buy Grado RS or PS, or maybe a Magnum v5 tune-up (not that I need yet another pair of headphones.)
Yeah, I was wondering why you would have said that. I also find the 325is so impressive that I feel that maybe (although I never heard them) that I may very well be done moving up in model/price range, because I'm afraid I may not like the sound signature as much. But one day if I get the opportunity and they are on display I will listen just out of curiosity to see if I like or dislike the differences, but for now I'm 100% content with the 325is and my sources.
This is the perfect setup
Ok first off I love them. The grados sound TREMENDOUS with bands like ACDC or pantera (pretty much old school stuff) but when you throw in modern metal or rock like the deftones you can tell that the sound mix requires SUB BASS, it doesn't sound true on some tracks. Don't get me wrong the grados have excellent bass and its very accurate but it lacks in quantity when playing mostly modern music. Overall I feel that the grado is a great secondary headphone almost a necessity once you hear it. It's a great privilege to have both the sr225i and the ue 6000
now the upper models are known to have better sub bass. Also moding can help with this. Things recorded on Ribbon Mic's tend to sound fantastic like oldschool punk and rock/folk.
I put electric tape around the ear pad and it boosted the sub bass a bit but also condensed the sound stage a little, I am considering mahogany cups, leather ear pads, and a leather headband and maybe a twag cable but I would like to have someone else do this and have it all done at once. I have no idea how much this would cost or who I can send it to. I think the leather pads would boost the bass some cause the seal
Something like this
In that case you maybe should have purchased a higher priced Grado with the money you are going to be spending on upgrades, no? Like the RS2i.
Nah I'm ass backwards like that lol I love improvements. But do u know who could do this for me?
I hear you, I know Martin custom audio does a lot of nice work and also has a big selection of different types of tonal woods to use, and also Vibrolabs makes two different types of wood cups that you can purchase from them. You can also take your cups apart and push holes though the felt on the back of the drivers to increase the bass yourself.
I kinda want to send the headphones to someone and have them do it so I don't screw anything up
You can check out www.martincustomaudio.com/
He has some amazing photographs of the work he's done, along with an email address to contact him. I was also considering to do this at one time, but it was very expensive and the return time was also very long, because he is very busy.
If you decide to go the www.vibrolabs.com route their cups are very nice and cost 100-150$U.S. depending on the style you choose, and it is very easy to do! If you really don't want to do it yourself, and are skeptical about it, you can send me a PM and I will gladly do it for you, if that is what you are getting at. Iv'e switched out drivers before it is very easy. I have SR325is drivers in Alessandro MS2i cups because a friend and I swapped because of sound preferences, and I liked the Alessandro cups (without the coins) better than the Grado cups. I would have been just as easy to remove the coins from the sR325is if I wanted, but my friend liked the coins so we just switched drivers out instead of removing and reinstalling them again.
