Sorry I am not sure if this is the right form but I guess since what I am looking for is portable it would go here.

I have found so many times that I have needed a recording device and yet I never have one. I have a 10GB 3G iPod and my brother said just get a microphone but I don't think it would be that great. I am looking for a small recorder either digital or analog that will record from a fair distance away and possible even from inside of a school bag or pocket (no I am not trying to spy on people or record conversations without asking it is just easier to leave it in there). My target range is about $50. Have any ideas of what to get or what to look for?

Easy for under fifty dollars. Pick up a used minidisc here or on ebay. Great digita; recorders and now that ipods have arrived, people are practically giving them away. Get an R50 or R900 from Sony -- two of the best recording mds they made.

for $50, get TWO minidisc recorders.
I get a lot of use with my R700 and a homemade binaurual mic.
oh yeah, with a omni directional mic you're going to record a lot of unwanted sounds. I joked with a friend with my MD by hanging a long mic hanging out my window and said Look I can listen in on my downstairs neighbor.
I think HiMD's are still going to be over a hundred, even used.
But legacy units like the R37's, R50's should be cheap.
