Medeski, Martin & Wood that is.

been exploring their music and im diggin it. i like that their percussionist has some funky hip-hop oriented shuffl-y beats and they can cross that funky line as well as other varietals of jazz that i know lil about but am liking what i know. i like that while their tunes wander off into that non-cohesive land of jazz they always keep it enough together where my toe can keep tappin.

any recommendations for artists similar in sound to M, M &M?

There is only one that I know of.

Check out Galactic

They're more of a 'jazz funk' sound from New Orleans.

I do love the MMW though.

Edit: Oh, and they do some good hip-hop jazz funk stuff with guest lyricists.

Hello, idiotekniQues. I'm a huge MMW fan... like really huge. Like I went to the Rothbury Festival up here in MI recently, and for me, MMW stole the show.

Unfortunately, while I've heard some similar groups, nobody does it like MMW as far as I can tell. Sorry.

That's what she said!

Sorry, I couldn't help myself. I've been watching too much of The Office.

I'd recommend the Bad Plus. They are an acoustic trio (double bass, piano, drums) so they don't really get into the funk, but they certainly "wander off into that non-cohesive land of jazz".

Oh, also, check out Nightmares on Wax, specifically an album entitled Smokers Delight from 1995. Different genre but similarly funky in a more laid back way.

I'm not a huge Galactic fan, but love Stanton Moore's solo projects. I recommend, in this order:

All Kooked Out
Flyin' the Koop
Emphasis on Parenthesis

Combustication is my favorite MMW album, btw. I'm also assuming you're familiar with some of the original stuff like Herbie Hancock's Headhunters and Miles Davis' On the Corner.

i dont know much about jazz but i have headhunters on vinyl from awhile back. watermelon man is INSANE!!!!!!!!

nightmare's on wax i also got on vinyl ages ago when i used to dj. good stuff!

i haev a lot of trip hop stuff from ninja tunes that is good but im lookin for a different kind of groove to complement that.

so far galactic (only heard most of two albums) is ok but a bit too corny? way too many vocals for sure

gotta listen to more though.

end of the world party is my current MMW album im exploring. so far it is quite impeccable.
